Le scénario est de Rick Jaffa et Amanda Silver. Ce film relance pour la deuxième fois, la franchise Planète des singes inspirée du roman de Pierre Boulle. L'histoire suit un chimpanzé du nom de César qui voit ses sens améliorés après que le chimiste Will Rodman a testé un médicament sur la mère du singe alors qu'il était un fœtus. Le film parle de l'arrogance humaine vis à vis des autres espèces et de l'émancipation de l'une de ces dernières. Le développement humain est également évoqué à travers le parcours du personnage de César, qui est, ironiquement, un singe. Par de nombreuses références, La Planète des singes : Les Origines rend hommage au premier film La Planète des singes (1968). Il reprend aussi la structure narrative du film La Conquête de la planète des singes (1972). La Planète des singes : Les Origines est un succès commercial et critique.
