Hrál klíčovou roli v oživení zájmu o ragtime v 70. letech 20. století pionýrskými nahrávkami klavírního díla Scotta Joplina. - Joshua Rifkin (born April 22, 1944 in New York) is an American conductor, keyboard player, and musicologist who is currently a Professor of Music at Boston University. As a performer he has recorded music by composers from Antoine Busnois to Silvestre Revueltas, and as a scholar has published research on composers from the Renaissance to the 20th century. He is famed among classical musicians and aficionados for his increasingly influential theory that most of Bach's choral works were sung with only one singer per choral line. Rifkin argued: "So long as we define 'chorus' in the conventional modern sense, then Bach's chorus, with few exceptions, simply did not exist." He is best known by the general public, however, for having played a central role in the ragtime revival in the 1970s, with the three albums he recorded of Scott Joplin's works for Nonesuch Records. Rifkin se fait surtout connaitre avec sa thèse, selon laquelle Johann Sebastian Bach n'aurait eu pour ses cantates des chorales composées seulement d'un seul chanteur par voix. Entre-temps des interprètes de musique ancienne comme Andrew Parrott, Paul McCreesh, Konrad Junghänel, Jeffrey Thomas, et Sigiswald Kuijken ont enregistré avec grand succès de nombreuses œuvres de Bach avec ces petites chorales. D'autres spécialistes de Bach comme Gustav Leonhardt, Ton Koopman, Masaaki Suzuki, John Eliot Gardiner ou Philippe Herreweghe se sont montrés réticents ou opposés à la thèse de Rifkin. Pour l'instant Kuijken enregistre d'après les études de Rifkin un cycle de cantates de Bach pour une année liturgique complète, pour chaque dimanche et pour tous les jours de fêtes une cantate. (fr)

Uczestniczył w kursach w Darmstadt w 1961 i 1965 r. pod kierunkiem Karlheinza Stockhausena. Wykładał na kilku uczelniach, w tym w Brandeis (1970-1982), Harvardzie, Nowym Jorku oraz Yale. W 1999 otrzymał doktorat honoris causa Uniwersytetu w Dortmundzie. Jest propagatorem wykonywania utworów Jana Sebastiana Bacha w pojedynczej obsadzie głosów w chórze – tj. zastępowania chóru solistami.
