| - New York University (NYU) is a private, nonsectarian, coeducational research university in New York City. NYU's main campus is situated in the Greenwich Village section of Manhattan. Founded in 1831, NYU is the largest private, nonprofit institution of higher education in the United States, with an enrollment of more than 40,000.
NYU consists of 16 schools, colleges, and divisions, located in six centers throughout Manhattan. NYU operates study abroad facilities in London, Paris, Florence, Prague, Madrid, Berlin, Accra, Shanghai, and Singapore, and has just announced facilities slated to open Spring 2008 in Tel Aviv and Buenos Aires.
Most recently, the government of the United Arab Emirates has announced plans to fund a campus abroad for NYU in the capital city of Abu Dhabi, the first of its kind to be established abroad by a major U.S. research university, which is set to receive students by 2010. Additional proposed sites are being finalized in the Persian Gulf Region and the Middle East.
In a deal recently approved by its board and state regulators, Polytechnic University, an engineering and technology university located in Brooklyn, New York, will merge into NYU becoming the Polytechnic Institute of New York University and providing NYU with an engineering school for the first time in three decades.
On April 21, 1831, the new institution received its charter and was incorporated as the University of the City of New York by the New York State Legislature; older documents often refer to it by that name. The university has been popularly known as New York University since its beginning and was officially renamed New York University in 1896. In 1832, NYU held its first classes in rented rooms of four-story Clinton Hall, situated near City Hall. Feeling the pressures of imminent bankruptcy, NYU President James McNaughton Hester negotiated the sale of the University Heights campus to the City University of New York, which occurred in 1973. After the sale of the Bronx campus, University College merged with Washington Square College. In the 1980s, under the leadership of President John Brademas, NYU launched a billion-dollar campaign that was spent almost entirely on updating facilities.. The campaign was set to complete in 15 years, but ended up being completed in 10. In 2003 current President John Sexton launched a 2.5-billion dollar campaign for funds to be spent especially on faculty and financial aid resources., the center of learning in ancient Greece. (en)

Une tentative pour assurer l’égalité d’entrée à l’université échoua en 1871, lorsque l’inscription devint gratuite pour les meilleurs étudiants. Les anciens élèves, des protestants des classes aisées, voyaient cette mesure d’un mauvais œil, car cela faisait de l’université une œuvre de charité qui n’était dès lors plus assez convenable pour leurs enfants. Cette mesure fut donc rapidement abandonnée. L’université ne fut ouverte aux femmes qu’en 1888 pour les études de 2et 3cycles, en 1890 pour l’enseignement et le droit, et en 1914 pour les 1cycles au Washington Square College. Ce n’est qu’en 1959 que les femmes furent finalement autorisées à s’inscrire dans les cursus du College of Arts and Science, sur le campus de University Heights.
Au début des années 1920, l’université de New York attira les meilleurs étudiants juifs qui étaient refusés dans d’autres établissements : en effet, les universités de la Ivy League avaient institué des « quotas de juifs » qui stigmatisaient spécifiquement les immigrants juifs de première génération vivant à New York. Malgré une tentative d’instaurer elle aussi de tels quotas, une grande partie des étudiants de l’université de New York étaient juifs. À la fin des années 1960 et au début des années 1970, la crise financière grippa le fonctionnement de la ville de New York ainsi que plusieurs autres institutions, dont l’université. Sentant augmenter les risques de banqueroute, le futur président de la NYU, James McNaughton Hester, négocia la vente du campus de University Heights à l’université de la Ville de New York (CUNY) en 1973. Ce campus perdait de l’argent ce qui rendait la gestion de deux campus très difficile. Selon le chancelier, Sidney Borowitz : Après la revente du campus de University Heights, l’université fusionna avec le Washington Square College. La perte la plus significative de la NYU au cours de cette période fut le départ de la School of Engineering qui intégra l’université Polytechnique de Brooklyn.
Au milieu des années 1980, elle devint de plus en plus populaire auprès des étudiants, et cela même en dehors de New York. Pour faire face à la demande en logement et en salles de classe, l’université dut acheter de vieux immeubles de bureaux, des hôtels et même des nightclubs. (fr)
