- Herding is the act of bringing individual animals together into a group (herd), maintaining the group, and moving the group from place to place—or any combination of those. Herding can refer either to the process of animals forming herds in the wild, or to human intervention forming herds for some purpose. While the layperson uses the term "herding" to describe this human intervention, most individuals involved in the process term it mustering, "working stock", or droving. Some animals instinctively gather together as a herd. A group of animals fleeing a predator will demonstrate herd behavior for protection; while some predators, such as wolves and dogs have instinctive herding abilities derived from primitive hunting instincts. Instincts in herding dogs and trainability can be measured at noncompetitive herding tests. Dogs exhibiting basic herding instincts can be trained to aid in herding and to compete in herding and stock dog trials. Sperm whales have also been observed teaming up to herd prey in a coordinated feeding behavior. Herding is used in agriculture to manage domesticated animals. Herding can be performed by people or trained animals such as herding dogs that control the movement of livestock under the direction of a person. The people whose occupation it is to herd or control animals often have herd added to the name of the animal they are herding to describe their occupation (shepherd, goatherd, cowherd). A competitive sport has developed in some countries where the combined skill of man and herding dog is tested and judged in a "trial", such as a sheepdog trial. Animals such as sheep, camel, yak, and goats are mostly reared. They provide milk, meat and other products to the herders and their families. (en)

Algunos animales se reúnen instintivamente en manada. Un grupo de animales que huye de un depredador mostrará un comportamiento de manada para protegerse; mientras que algunos depredadores, como los lobos y los perros, tienen cualidades instintivas para el arreo derivadas de los instintos primitivos de caza. Los instintos en el perros pastores y la capacidad de adiestramiento se pueden medir en pruebas de arreo no competitivas. Los perros que exhiben instintos básicos de arreo de animales pueden ser entrenados para ayudar en el pastoreo y para competir en pruebas de arreo y ganado. También se ha observado que los cachalotes se unen para arrear presas en un comportamiento de alimentación coordinado. El arreo sirve en la agricultura para manejar animales domésticos. El arreo puede ser realizado por personas o animales entrenados como perros pastores que controlan el movimiento del ganado bajo la dirección de una persona. En algunos países se ha desarrollado un deporte competitivo en el que la habilidad combinada del hombre y el perro pastor se prueba y juzga en una "prueba", como una prueba de perros pastores. Gatunki pasterskie to głównie owce, kozy, lamy, renifery, bydło, trzoda chlewna, wielbłądy, konie i jaki. Dla ludzi trudniących się pasterstwem wiąże się z koczowniczym lub transhumancyjnym trybem życia. W Polsce prowadzi się sezonowy wypas owiec na halach górskich, między innymi tak zwany wypas kulturowy. (pl)
- Med vallning menas förmågan för ett djur eller människa att driva andra djur i önskad riktning. Vallning är en central metod hos många flockdjur, där flockens ledare driver de underordnade bort från sig eller framför sig i önskad riktning. Normalt går vallning ut på att blockera den "förbjudna riktningen", det vill säga det håll dit flocken inte får röra sig. I de fall där en annan djurart eller människa vallar djur, är det viktigt att djuren som vallas uppfattar vallaren som ledare, alternativt en respektingivande individ som man bör lyda för sitt eget bästa. Med vallningsinstinkt hos djur, innefattas förmåga att kunna förutse de vallande djurens beteende och agera därefter. Vallhundar är ett vanligt exempel där man kan se att vissa hundar har förmåga att driva får, getter, gäss, med mera. Huruvida hunden har vallningsinstinkt har främst att göra med rasens egenskaper, men även hur mycket träning i ledarskap och vallning man har haft med hunden. Även hästar har vallningsinstinkt, vilket man kan se när man studerar en hästflock och hur de beter sig mot varandra. Vissa hästraser har dessutom s.k. "cow sense", vilket innebär att de dessutom är bra på att förutse kors beteende och hur man vallar dem. "Cow sense" utnyttjas i bland annat westernridningens gren "cutting" där man ska plocka ut kor från en hjord och hålla dem borta från övriga hjorden. (sv)
