To make this happen, the GNU Project began working on an operating system called GNU. GNU is a recursive acronym that stands for "GNU's Not Unix". With the Linux kernel being released under the GNU General Public License in 1992, the GNU project no longer relied on any proprietary software to run. L'objectif officiel du projet était de produire un nombre de logiciels libres suffisamment important pour pouvoir travailler sans aucun logiciel propriétaire. La première étape importante était de produire un système d’exploitation libre. Pour cela, le projet GNU a commencé par élaborer un système d’exploitation appelé le système GNU. Cet objectif fut atteint en 1992 lorsque la dernière brique manquante, un noyau, fut apportée par Linux, un noyau de type Unix libre. Actuellement les objectifs du projet GNU sont le développement de logiciel et la sensibilisation du public aux principes éthiques à l'origine du logiciel libre. (fr)

GNU è un acronimo ricorsivo che significa GNU Non è Unix. L'obiettivo principale del progetto è sviluppare "un insieme sufficiente di software libero [...] per non dover più usare software non libero". Per realizzare ciò il Progetto GNU ha sviluppato un sistema operativo chiamato GNU. Con il rilascio del kernel Linux come software libero nel 1992, il progetto non utilizza più software proprietario.   • Projeto GNU, em computação, é um projeto iniciado por Richard Stallman em 1984, com o objetivo de criar um sistema operacional totalmente livre, que qualquer pessoa teria direito de usar, modificar e redistribuir, o programa, seu código fonte, desde que garantido para todos os mesmos direitos. Este sistema operacional GNU deveria ser compatível com o sistema operacional UNIX, porém não deveria utilizar-se do código fonte do UNIX. Stallman escolheu o nome GNU porque este nome, além do significado original do mamífero Gnu, é um acrônimo recursivo de: GNU is Not Unix (em português: GNU não é Unix). A partir de 1984 Stallman e vários programadores, que abraçaram a causa, vieram desenvolvendo as peças principais de um sistema operacional, como compilador de linguagem C, editores de texto, etc. Em 1991 o sistema operacional já estava quase pronto, mas faltava o principal, que é o kernel do sistema operacional. O grupo liderado por Stallman estava desenvolvendo um kernel chamado Hurd. Porém, em 1991, aconteceu algo que mudou o rumo da História: um jovem finlandês chamado Linus Torvalds havia criado um kernel que poderia usar todas as peças do sistema operacional GNU. Este kernel ficou conhecido como Linux, contração de Linus e Unix. Atualmente, o sistema operacional GNU com o kernel Linux é conhecido como GNU/Linux, que é como o projeto solicita aos utilizadores que se refiram ao sistema completo, embora a maioria das pessoas se referem ao sistema apenas como Linux por uma questão de comodidade. Mas o próprio Linus Torvalds discorda da nomenclatura GNU/Linux, chamando seu Sistema Operacional apenas de Linux. A discussão e desentendimento entre Stallman e Torvalds prosseguem acerca da correta nomenclatura a respeito do Sistema, arrastando também as opiniões dos inúmeros usuários e desenvolvedores do Sistema GNU/Linux (ou apenas Linux).
