- Diego Durán (c. 1537 – 1588) was a Dominican friar best known for his authorship of one of the earliest Western books on the history and culture of the Aztecs, The History of the Indies of New Spain, a book that was much criticised in his lifetime for helping the "heathen" maintain their culture. Also known as the Durán Codex, The History of the Indies of New Spain was completed in about 1581. Durán also wrote Book of the Gods and Rites (1574–1576), and Ancient Calendar (c. 1579). He was fluent in Nahuatl, the Aztec language, and was therefore able to consult natives and Aztec codices as well as work done by earlier friars. His empathetic nature allowed him to gain the confidence of many native people who would not share their stories with Europeans, and was able to document many previously unknown folktales and legends that make his work unique. Frate domenicano, è conosciuto principalmente per essere l'autore di uno dei primi libri occidentali sulla storia e la cultura degli Aztechi, (conosciuto anche come Codice Durán), libro che fu fortemente criticato nella sua epoca per l'aiuto che dava al mantenimento di una cultura pagana. Durán parlava correntemente la lingua azteca e riuscì ad utilizzare per il suo lavoro i racconti e i codici pittorici della popolazione locale oltre ai lavori dei religiosi suoi predecessori. La sua natura empatica gli permise di guadagnare la fiducia di molti nativi che normalmente non avrebbero condiviso le loro storie con gli europei, e fu così in grado di documentare numerosi racconti e leggende precedentemente sconosciuti, rendendo unico il suo lavoro. Hij sprak vloeiend Nahuatl (de Azteekse taal) en wist zo informatie te krijgen van zowel de inheemse bevolking, als uit de Azteekse codices en het werk van broeders, die hem in dit onderzoek voorgingen. Durán durfde kritiek te uiten op de Spaanse conquistadores. Over de verdwenen Azteekse schat schreef hij: 'Om deze schat, lieten de veroveraars meer tranen dan om de misdaden die ze hadden gepleegd.'
