- Dazzle Ships és el nom del quart disc del grup anglès de pop electrònic Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. Va aparèixer al mes de març del 1983. Després d'un període difícil durant el qual Humphreys i McCluskey van estar a punt de dissoldre el grup, OMD tornaren a l'actualitat presentant el seu disc més arriscat. "Dazzle Ships" està radicalment polaritzat: d'una banda, s'hi ofereixen temes de pur pop electrònic (com els senzills "Genetic engineering" i "Telegraph", o les balades "International" o "The romance of the telescope"); de l'altra, peces com "ABC Auto-Industry" o "Dazzle ships (Parts II, III & VII)" mostren la seva cara més radical i experimental. Líricament, l'àlbum conté moltes referències a temes candents de política internacional, com ara la guerra freda i el bloc socialista ("Radio waves", "Radio Prague"...), o la dictadura de Somoza ("International"). - Dazzle Ships is the fourth studio album by English electronic band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), released on 4 March 1983 by Virgin Records (under the guise of the fictitious Telegraph label). Its title and cover art allude to a painting by Vorticist artist Edward Wadsworth based on dazzle camouflage, titled Dazzle-ships in Drydock at Liverpool. The follow-up album to OMD's commercially successful Architecture & Morality (1981), Dazzle Ships marked a departure in sound for the group, who contended with writer's block and record company pressure to duplicate their previous release. The album is noted for its experimental content, particularly musique concrète sound collages, and the use of shortwave radio recordings to explore Cold War and Eastern Bloc themes. It also concerns itself with the rise of technology in society. The record spawned two singles: "Genetic Engineering" and "Telegraph". Dazzle Ships met with largely negative reviews and, despite reaching the top five of the UK Albums Chart, was regarded as a commercial flop; the record nevertheless attracted a cult following. Over the years it has been cited as an influence by multiple artists, and has come to be acknowledged by music journalists as an underrated and misunderstood work. Il camuffamento dazzle ('abbaglio'), fatto per lo più di linee e forme geometriche, serviva a confondere il nemico nello stimare le distanze in mare. La copertina dell'album riprende tale disegno, mentre il brano omonimo consiste in suoni creati da navi in situazione di guerra. Altri brani affrontano il tema della politica internazionale (International, Silent Running) e altri le scoperte scientifiche ed invenzioni (Genetic Engineering, Telegraph, The Romance of the Telescope, Radio Waves) talvolta in stile synth-pop o come ballata. Viene fatto grande uso di sperimentazioni sonore e tecniche di musique concrète utilizzando voci e suoni pre-registrati, sintetizzatori e il campionatore. Fra gli strumenti anche una macchina da scrivere ed il giocattolo Speak and Spell. Due brani dell'album erano già stati pubblicati in precedenza come lato B di singoli: The Romance of the Telescope (Joan of Arc, 1981) e Of All The Things We've Made (Maid of Orleans, versione 12", 1982). Texterna kretsade kring det kalla kriget, automatiserad massproduktion, det teknokratiska tänkandet och faran i den okritiska tilliten till det framväxande datorsamhället och genteknologin (Frankensteins-monster-komplexet). Trots att den experimentella musikformen gjorde albumet till en relativt medioker försäljningsframgång har Dazzle Ships nått en viss status som milstolpe inom den seriösare synthmusiken och visas ofta stor aktning från kritiker.[källa behövs] Konvolutet avbildar ett så kallat vorticistiskt kamouflagemönster som användes på örlogsfartyg under första världskriget (se Dazzle-kamouflage). På denna tid identifierades skepp med blotta ögat i stället för på elektronisk väg, och de brutna geometriska formerna gjorde det i det närmaste omöjligt att bedöma ett fartygs storlek, kurs och hastighet, oavsett vilket färgfilter som lades över bilden. Omslaget designades av Peter Saville efter att han sett målningen Dazzle-ships in Drydock at Liverpool av Edward Wadsworth. Det var också Saville som föreslog albumtiteln Dazzle Ships.
