Death Cab for Cutie is an American indie rockband formed in Bellingham, Washington in 1997. It began as a solo project of Ben Gibbard, now the band's vocalist and guitarist. Gibbard took the band name from the title of the song written by Neil Innes and Vivian Stanshall and performed by their group the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band in The Beatles' 1967 film Magical Mystery Tour.

Gibbard's first album, You Can Play These Songs with Chords, was released as a demo, leading to a record deal with Barsuk Records. It was at this time that Gibbard decided to expand the project into a complete band, and recruited band members to join. The band has released six studio albums, four EPs, and one demo to date. Their most recent album, Narrow Stairs, was released on May 12, 2008 in the United Kingdom and was released on May 13, 2008 in the United States. (en)

Een gelimiteerde versie van dit album bevatte drie bonustracks, die later verschenen als The Stability E.P. In 2003 was er opnieuw een wisseling van drummers. Schorr werd opgevolgd door Jason McGerr. Dat jaar kwam het album Transatlanticism uit, tot dan de succesvolste cd van de groep. In 2004 verscheen The John Byrd E.P. In de zomer van 2005 kwam Plans uit, voor het eerst niet bij Barsuk Records, maar bij het grote Atlantic Records.
