- The Brigate Garibaldi or Garibaldi Brigades were partisan units aligned with the Italian Communist Party active in the armed resistance against both German and Italian fascist forces during World War II. The Brigades were mostly made up of communists, but also included members of other parties of the National Liberation Committee (NLC), in particular the Italian Socialist Party. Led by Luigi Longo and Pietro Secchia, they were the largest of the partisan groups and suffered the highest number of losses. Members wore a red handkerchief around the neck with red stars on their hats. (en)

Bien que composées majoritairement de militants communistes, ces brigades de partisans comptaient en leur sein des militants d'autres sensibilités et organisations politiques, comme des militants du Comité de libération nationale, des militants socialistes, ou des combattants liés au Parti d'action voire à la Démocratie chrétienne. Les brigades Garibaldi étaient coordonnées par un commandement général composé de Luigi Longo et Pietro Secchia, tous deux leaders du Parti communiste italien. De tous les groupes de partisans ayant existé durant cette période, soit entre 1943 et 1945, les brigades Garibaldi étaient les plus importantes quant aux effectifs, et elles ont essuyé le plus de pertes humaines durant la guerre de libération de l'Italie. Coordinate da un comando generale diretto dagli esponenti comunisti Luigi Longo e Pietro Secchia, furono le formazioni partigiane più numerose e quelle che subirono le maggiori perdite totali durante la guerra partigiana. Гарибальдийские бригады составляли около половины вооружённых сил партизанской армии и были наиболее боеспособными и хорошо организованными. Летом и осенью 1944 года принимали ключевое участие в широкомасштабном наступлении партизанской армии в Центральной и Северной Италии, а также стали ударной силой Апрельского восстания 1945 года. С середины 1944 по март 1945 года они провели в целом около 6,5 тыс. боевых операций и более 5,5 тыс. диверсий. На конец апреля 1945 года в гарибальдийских бригадах насчитывалось около 51 тыс. бойцов, входящих в 23 дивизии, из общего количества около 100 тыс. партизан. В частности, на 15 апреля главное командование бригад располагало 9-ю дивизиями в Пьемонте (15 тыс. бойцов), тремя — в Ломбардии (4 тыс.), четырьмя — в Венеции (10 тыс.), тремя — в Эмилии (12 тыс.) и четырьмя в Лигурии (10 тыс.).
