- První ocenění Sportovec roku ve Spojených státech iniciovala agentura Associated Press (AP) v roce 1931. V době, kdy ženy ve sportu nedostávaly stejného uznání jako muži, nabídla AP sportovce mužského a ženského pohlaví ročník ocenění profesionálním nebo amatérským sportovcem. O cenách se každoročně hlasuje v porotě sportovních redaktorů AP z celých Spojených států, která zahrnuje hlavně americký sport. Výsledkem je, že velká většina vítězů byli Američané. O čest se mohou ucházet i neameričané, kteří při několika příležitostech zvítězili. (cs)
- Die Auszeichnung Associated Press Athlete of the Year wird seit 1931 von der Presseagentur Associated Press (kurz AP) in den USA vergeben und ist damit die älteste Auszeichnung für die sogenannten „Weltsportler des Jahres“. Seit der ersten Vergabe geht die Ehrung sowohl an einen männlichen Athleten als auch an eine Sportlerin des Jahres. Für die Wahl zum „Athlete of the Year“ kommen grundsätzlich Profisportler wie Amateure in Frage. Den Preisträger ermitteln Sportredakteure von Associated Press in einer jährlichen Wahl. Wie bei der Auszeichnung zum Sports Illustrated Sportler des Jahres sind auch bei der Auszeichnung der Associated Press zwar Staatsbürger aller Länder als „Athlete of the Year“ wählbar, die Preisträger jedoch bis auf wenige Ausnahmen US-amerikanische.(Siehe auch: Sportler des Jahres)

At a time when women in sports were not given the same recognition as men, the AP offered a male and a female athlete of the year award to either a professional or amateur athlete. The awards are voted on annually by a panel of AP sports editors from across the United States, covering mainly American sports. As a result, a large majority of the winners have been Americans. Bien que tous les sportifs du monde soient théoriquement éligibles, ces titres sont toutefois en grande majorité décernés à des sportifs américains, dans des sports intéressant avant tout le public américain (plus grande représentation du baseball, basket-ball, hockey sur glace ou golf PGA). In un'epoca in cui allo sport femminile non erano dato lo stesso riconoscimento di quello maschile, la AP assegnò un premio di atleta dell'anno sia maschile che femminile ad atleti sia professionisti che amatoriali. I votanti sono giornalisti dell'Associated Press da tutti gli Stati Uniti. Una larga maggioranza dei vincitori sono statunitensi anche se anche i non-americani possono vincere il premio, sebbene sia capitato di rado. (it)
