It was the first season of the DTM to be run under Group GT3 regulations, following the costly two-year "Class 1 Touring Cars" venture that led to Audi and BMW withdrawing manufacturer support from the series. Maximilian Götz controversially won the championship in the last race following both a first-corner collision between his rivals Kelvin van der Linde and Liam Lawson and team orders imposed by Mercedes-AMG. L'edizione 2021 segna uno spartiacque nella storia del DTM, col passaggio dai prototipi silhouette alle vetture GT3: tale cambio di regolamento porta all'entrata di nuovi costruttori nella serie, con il ritorno di Mercedes e i debutti di Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren e, in forma ufficiosa, Porsche. Il titolo piloti è stato conquistato per la prima volta dal tedesco Maximilian Götz su Mercedes-AMG GT3, il quale ha avuto la meglio solo nell'appuntamento conclusivo del Norisring del neozelandese Liam Lawson, quest'ultimo vincitore della classifica Junior su Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo, e del sudafricano Kelvin van der Linde su Audi R8 LMS Evo — protagonisti di un convulso e polemico epilogo nel secondo e decisivo round sul tracciato norimbergense —; lo stesso Lawson, con i compagni di squadra Alexander Albon e Nick Cassidy, ha contribuito al successo del team italiano Red Bull AlphaTauri AF Corse nella classifica per squadre — appena il secondo nella storia del DTM per un marchio non tedesco, dall'affermazione di Alfa Romeo nel Meisterschaft 1993, e il primo sotto la formula Masters introdotta dal 2000 —, mentre il titolo costruttori è stato agevolmente incamerato da Mercedes. - Het DTM seizoen 2021 was het 22e seizoen van de Deutsche Tourenwagen-Masters, na de hervatting van het kampioenschap in 2000. René Rast was de verdedigend kampioen bij de coureurs, maar keert niet terug vanwege zijn overstap naar de Formule E. Het kampioenschap wordt vanaf dit jaar onder GT Plus-reglementen verreden, nadat zowel Audi als BMW als constructeurs vertrokken uit de klasse. Hierdoor zijn er geen fabrieksteams meer, maar enkel privéteams, in een poging om meer fabrikanten aan te trekken. Verder worden de banden vanaf dit seizoen geleverd door Michelin, waar deze tot 2020 door Hankook werden geleverd. Ook worden voor races voor het eerst sinds 2001 begonnen met rollende starts. Maximilian Götz werd kampioen in de laatste race op de Norisring, nadat zijn titelrivalen Kelvin van der Linde en Liam Lawson met elkaar in aanraking kwamen.
