- Die Stadtmauer von Avignon ist ein 4330 Meter langer Mauerring, der die historische Altstadt von Avignon umgibt. Sie wird von 39 Türmen und sieben Haupttoren flankiert und gilt als eine der besterhaltenen Anlagen ihrer Art in Europa. Die Stadtmauer wird seit dem 23. Februar 1902 als Monument historique eingestuft. Die Stadtmauer verläuft ellipsenförmig um die Innenstadt innerhalb des Boulevardrings von Avignon. Sie ist fast vollständig geschlossen und wird nur vom Felsen Rocher des Doms unterbrochen, der selbst als natürlicher Schutzwall dient. Die Mauer wurde mit dem Kalkstein „molasse burdigalienne“ gebaut, der im Burdigalium im Carpentras-Avignon-Camargue-Sedimentbecken entstand und in der Umgebung von Avignon reichlich vorkommt. (de)

- Les remparts d'Avignon sont les fortifications ceinturant le bourg ancien d'Avignon dans le département du Vaucluse, en région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. C'est l'une des rares villes françaises à avoir conservé l'intégralité de ses remparts. Il a existé plusieurs fortifications depuis l'Antiquité tardive dont les plus récentes datent de la deuxième moitié du XIVe siècle, érigées sur l'ordre du pape Innocent VI. Avec son centre historique, composé du Palais des Papes, de l'ensemble épiscopal et du pont d’Avignon, elle a été classée au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO. - Las murallas de Aviñón (en francés, Remparts, esto es, murallas, defensas) es un antiguo recinto murario de la ciudad de Aviñón (Francia). Forma parte del Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde el año 1995, junto con el Palacio de los Papas, la catedral, el Petit Palais y puente sobre el Ródano. Se encuentran en buen estado de conservación, representando uno de los mejores ejemplos que quedan de fortificaciones medievales. Fueron construidas por los papas en el siglo XIV. Pueden verse 39 torres macizas y varias puertas, tres de las cuales son del siglo XIV. Las murallas fueron varias veces reconstruidas y reforzadas en los siglos posteriores, habiéndose restaurado en el siglo XIX bajo la dirección de Viollet-le-Duc. El conjunto de defensas de la ciudad se encuentran en el lado septentrional de la llamada Rocher des Doms, o promontorio rocoso sobre el Ródano en el que se encuentra el Palacio de los Papas y la catedral. Entre sus torres, destacan la llamada Tour des Chiens («Torre de los perros») y la Tour du Chatelet, que domina el acceso al puente de Saint Bénézet.

- The walls of Avignon (French: Les Remparts d'Avignon) are a series of defensive stone walls that surround the city of Avignon in the south of France. They were originally built in the 14th century during the Avignon papacy and have been continually rebuilt and repaired throughout their subsequent history. The walls replaced an earlier double set of defensive walls that had been completed in the first two decades of the 13th century. During the Albigensian Crusade the town sided with the Count of Toulouse, Raymond VII but in 1226, after a three-month siege by Louis VIII of France, Avignon capitulated and was forced to dismantle the walls and fill in the moats. Beginning in around 1231, the defences were rebuilt. Although these early walls have not survived, their path is preserved in the street plan of the city. In 1309 Pope Clement V moved to Avignon and under the papacy the town expanded outside the limits of the earlier city walls. From the 1350s during the Hundred Years' War the town became vulnerable to pillage by marauding bands of mercenaries and in 1357 under Innocent VI, the fifth Avignon pope, work began on the construction of new set of city walls to enclose the expanded town. The walls took nearly 20 years to complete. The walls stretch for 4.3 km (2.7 mi) and enclose an area of 150 ha (370 acres). There were originally twelve gates controlling access to the city but this number was reduced to seven when the fortifications were modified between 1481 and 1487. There are now 15 vehicular entrances and 11 pedestrian entrances. (en)
