- L'USS Philadelphia est une canonnière de la Continental Navy. Utilisée par des soldats de la Continental Army, elle fait partie d'une flotte sous le commandement du général Benedict Arnold qui combat le 11 octobre 1776 lors de la bataille de l'île Valcour contre une flotte plus importante de la Royal Navy sur le lac Champlain. Bien que de nombreux bateaux américains participant à la bataille sont endommagés, le Philadelphie est l'un des rares à couler ce jour-là. Dans les jours qui suivent la bataille principale, la plupart des autres bateaux de la flotte américaine sont coulés, incendiés ou capturés. C'est l'un des rares navires de ce type utilisés pendant la guerre d'indépendance des États-Unis. En 1935, l'archéologue amateur de marine militaire Lorenzo Hagglund la retrouve au fond du lac Champlain et la renfloue. - USS Philadelphia is a gunboat (referred to in contemporary documents as a gundalow or gondola) of the Continental Navy. She was constructed from July-August 1776 for service during the American Revolutionary War. Manned by Continental Army soldiers, she was part of a fleet under the command of General Benedict Arnold that fought against the British Royal Navy in the Battle of Valcour Island on Lake Champlain. Philadelphia was sunk during the battle on 11 October 1776. In 1935, amateur military marine archaeologist located her remains standing upright at the bottom of Lake Champlain. The wreck was raised to the surface and salvaged. In 1961 she was bequeathed to the Smithsonian Institution. Philadelphia and associated artifacts are now part of the permanent collection of the National Museum of American History, in Washington, D.C., where curator Philip K. Lundeberg was responsible for arranging her initial display. The vessel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark. (en)
