Il motivo è che ogni spedizione deve essere formata da tredici guerrieri e il tredicesimo deve essere uno straniero. Ahmad Ibn Fadlan impara presto la lingua nordica e fa amicizia con alcuni dei vichinghi, che lo ribattezzano amichevolmente Eban. L'arabo alla fine si dimostra indispensabile per la vittoria finale degli scandinavi contro i "mostri" Wendol. La trama, tratta dal romanzo di Michael Crichton Mangiatori di Morte mescola i racconti di viaggiatori arabi con la trama della seconda parte di Beowulf.
