Neben Lörrach und (den dazwischenliegenden Gemeinden) Hüningen (Huningue) und Weil am Rhein ist Saint-Louis eine der direkten Nichtschweizer Nachbarstädte von Basel und Teil der Trinationalen Agglomeration Basel. Die Stadt gehört zum Kanton Saint-Louis im Arrondissement Mulhouse und ist Sitz des Kommunalverbandes Communauté d’agglomération des Trois Frontières. Sie grenzt außer an Basel ebenso an Allschwil (Schweiz), Village-Neuf, Huningue, Hégenheim, Hésingue und Blotzheim. Die Einwohner werden auf Französisch Ludoviciens (nach der lateinischen Form von Ludwig) genannt. Von 1871 bis 1918 hieß die Ortschaft amtlich St. Ludwig.   • Saint-Louis est une commune française, située dans la circonscription administrative du Haut-Rhin et, depuis le 1er janvier 2021, dans le territoire de la Collectivité européenne d'Alsace, en région Grand Est. Elle fait partie de l'agglomération « trinationale » de Bâle (Suisse). Cette commune se trouve dans la région historique et culturelle d'Alsace et jouxte la frontière entre la France et la Suisse. Ses habitants sont appelés les Ludoviciens et les Ludoviciennes.Il s'agit de la troisième commune du département en nombre d'habitants. Saint-Louis existe depuis 1684, en vertu d’une ordonnance du roi Louis XIV. Le blason de la ville devait être celui des armoiries du Royaume de France, d'azur aux trois fleurs de lys d'or, mais un défaut survint lors de l'enregistrement au Tribunal de Mulhouse, les fleurs de lys étaient blanches et non jaunes, donc le blason officiel devint d'azur à trois fleurs de lys d'argent posées deux et une [2]. Son développement rapide est dû à sa situation géographique. La commune a été fondée entre le Riss et le Flandrien, deux plateaux rhénans, à côté de Huningue, qui était alors un village entouré d'une forteresse de Vauban (à présent détruite), et à côté de Bâle, une ville forte. De plus, elle est la dernière (ou première) commune française de la route très empruntée reliant Strasbourg à Bâle. Cette route existe encore et est empruntée par plusieurs routes départementales. Enfin, grâce à sa proximité avec la Suisse et l'Allemagne, Saint-Louis attire beaucoup de travailleurs, notamment des frontaliers. La commune est composée de quatre quartiers, dont trois sont reconnus. Il s'agit de Saint-Louis-centre, Bourgfelden (ancienne commune ayant fusionné en 1953), Neuweg (ancien quartier de Blotzheim ayant rejoint Saint-Louis cinq ans plus tard) et Michelfelden (ancien lieu-dit d'appartenance bâloise ayant, en 1793, rejoint Bourglibre, nom de Saint-Louis pendant la Révolution française). Mit 22.413 Einwohnern (Stand 1. Januar 2019) ist die Stadt die drittgrößte Gemeinde im Département. Die Einwohner werden auf Französisch Ludoviciens (nach der lateinischen Form von Ludwig) genannt. Von 1871 bis 1918 hieß die Ortschaft amtlich St. Ludwig. Mundartlich sagte man im Elsass und in Basel bis in das 20. Jahrhundert Burgliber. Die Bezeichnung St. Ludwig war nie volkstümlich und wird seit 1918 kaum mehr verwendet. (de)
