The first Palais des Festivals et des Congrès was a building built in 1949 to host the Cannes Film Festival. The original building was located on the boulevard of Promenade de la Croisette on the present site of the Hotel Palais Stephanie Managed by Sofitel. In response to the growing success of the Festival and the advent of the first business conventions, such as the MIPTV Media Market since 1965, the City of Cannes decided to build a new Palais in 1979.

The new building, designed by the architects Bennett & Druet and constructed on the site of the municipal Casino, opened in December 1982 and expanded in 1999 with the construction of the Espace Riviera, a new space of 10,000 square meters. Today, the Palais des Festivals has an overall space capacity of 25,000 square meters for exhibitions, which is used for exhibitions, as well as numerous rooms and 18 auditoriums. (en)

De hele Croisette is dan afgesloten voor verkeer en de filmsterren worden aangevoerd met luxe limousines tot aan de beroemde rode loper, via welke zij de trappen betreden, waarna zij voor het publiek op straat aan de blikken worden onttrokken. De nachtelijke feesten worden gehouden in de diverse nachtclubs en discotheken, waaraan Cannes zo rijk is. Meestal zijn dit besloten feesten, waar het grote publiek wordt geweerd. Behalve het filmfestival trekt elk jaar in maart in Le Palais de Mipin, de grootste onroerend goedbeurs ter wereld, zo'n 25.000 professionals. Jaarlijks zijn er in Le Palais congressen op het gebied van muziek, geluidsdragers en IT-technologie. Daarnaast is Cannes gastheer voor het Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. Hiermee is Cannes de grootste conferentiestad van Frankrijk. De gasten van deze evenementen ontkomen niet aan een barbezoek in het tegenover Le Palais gelegen populaire Farfalla. Barnard Brochand, de ambitieuze burgemeester van Cannes, wil, overeenkomstig het oorspronkelijke ontwerp van het Palais, een étage toevoegen aan het gebouw. In 2007 is daaromtrent een seismologisch en financieel onderzoek ingesteld. De bouwkosten worden geraamd op 175 miljoen euro, waarvan de stad Cannes zelf 50 miljoen wil bijdragen; de rest moet komen van de centrale Franse overheid in Parijs. (nl)
