Hij was fabriekscoureur voor Norton, Triumph, Kawasaki, Honda en Suzuki, maar won ook de Production 1000 TT tijdens de TT van Man van 1974 op de beroemde Triumph T150 Trident "Slippery Sam". Zijn beste seizoen in het wereldkampioenschap wegrace was van 1977, toen hij ondanks het feit dat hij slechts in vier races finishte twee overwinningen boekte en achtste werd in de 250cc-klasse. Grant won ook zeven races in de Isle of Man TT en vijf races in de North West 200. Hij vergaarde dan ook de meeste roem in op de stratencircuits van Noord-Ierland en het eiland Man. (nl)
