He was a professor of Environmental Economics at Università della Tuscia (Italy) who engaged very actively in the social and political spheres with the political organization Partito Radicale and with the Luca Coscioni Association (LCA), which he presided over from 2002 to 2006. His life was marked by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) which claimed his life at the age of 38. (en)

Coscioni kreeg bekendheid door zijn strijd voor de wettelijke vrijheid om wetenschappelijk onderzoek te mogen verrichten op menselijke stamcellen teneinde mogelijkerwijs allerlei ziektes te kunnen genezen. Een Italiaans referendum in 2005 hierover haalde het vanwege verzet van de katholieke kerk uiteindelijk niet. Coscioni leed zelf aan de ziekte amyotrofe laterale sclerose (ALS) waardoor hij langzaam maar zeker geheel verlamd raakte. Coscioni overleed op 38-jarige leeftijd. (nl)
