- Uruguay has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film regularly since 2001. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. Uruguay, represented by Cinemateca Uruguaya, submitted drama A Place in the World to AMPAS in the fall of 1992. On 3 December 1992, AMPAS included the film on its list of official submissions and it was screened alongside 32 other films for AMPAS' Foreign Language Film Committee. On 17 February 1993, it was announced that the film had been nominated for an Oscar, representing Uruguay. A controversy quickly began when stories began circulating that the film had minimal Uruguayan artistic input- the film was shot by an Argentine writer/director in Argentina, the plot was set in Argentina, and the cast and crew were primarily from Argentina. The film was in the running (and finished in second place) to represent Argentina in the Oscar race, it represented Argentina at the Golden Globe Awards and eventually went on to win Best Picture at the Argentinian National Film Awards (the Asociación de Críticos Cinematográficos de Argentina) Ultimately, AMPAS disqualified the film and removed it from the Oscar ballot. Uruguay rejoined the Oscar competition in 2001. (en)
- Pierwszy film do nagrody Akademii Filmowej w kategorii dla najlepszego filmu nieanglojęzycznego Urugwaj zgłosił 17 lutego 1993 roku. Szybko jednak pojawiły się kontrowersje, że film Własny kawałek świata (hisz. Un lugar en el mundo) został nakręcony przez argentyńskiego reżysera Adolfo Aristarain, a jego treść powstała w Argentynie. 29 marca 1993 podczas 65. ceremonii wręczenia Oscarów, między ogłoszeniem nominacji a przyznaniem nagród wyszło na jaw, że film został zgłoszony jako obraz urugwajski jednak w całości powstał w Argentynie. Urugwaj ponownie zgłosił film dopiero w 2001 roku i od tego czasu zgłasza je regularnie. Do tej pory wszystkie filmy były w języku hiszpańskim i żadnemu się nie udało zdobyć statuetki. (pl)
- A partire dal 1993 l'Uruguay ha cominciato a presentare film all'Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences che lo rappresentassero all'Oscar come miglior film di lingua straniera. In quella prima occasione il film Un posto nel mondo arrivò fino alla nomination ma fu squalificato poiché il film fu ritenuto una produzione prevalentemente argentina con una partecipazione minima di figure uruguaiane, ed infatti fu proposto in quello stesso anno dall'Argentina per i Golden Globe. In seguito nessun film uruguaiano è mai entrato a far parte della cinquina finale delle nomination. Per tre volte sono stati selezionati film di Álvaro Brechner (it)
