- الموسيقى الإيطالية الشعبية ذات تاريخ قديم و معقد. تم توحيد البلاد في وقت متأخر جداً لذلك توجد فيه مئات الثقافات المنفصلة غير المتجانسة نسبياً بالمقارنة مع العديد من البلدان الأوروبية الأخرى. علاوة على ذلك موسيقى الفولك الإيطالية تعكس موقع إيطاليا الجغرافي في جنوب أوروبا وفي وسط البحر الأبيض المتوسط حيث يمكن مشاهدة التأثيرات العربية و الأفريقية و السلتية و الفارسية و البندقية و الغجرية و السلافية واضحة في الأنماط الموسيقية في المناطق الإيطالية. سمحت الجغرافيا الإيطالية و الهيمنة التاريخية للدول المدن بوجود أنماط موسيقية متنوعة تتعايش على مقربة من بضعها البعض.

- Italian folk music has a deep and complex history. National unification came quite late to the Italian peninsula, so its many hundreds of separate cultures remained un-homogenized until quite recently. Moreover, Italian folk music reflects Italy's geographic position at the south of Europe and in the center of the Mediterranean Sea: Celtic, Slavic, Arabic, Greek, Spanish and Byzantine influences are readily apparent in the musical styles of the Italian regions. Italy's rough geography and the historic dominance of small city states has allowed quite diverse musical styles to coexist in close proximity. Today, Italy's folk music is often divided into several spheres of geographic influence, a classification system proposed by Alan Lomax in 1956 and often repeated since. The Celtic and Slavic influences on the group and open-voice choral works of the Northern Italy contrast with the Greek, Byzantine, and Arabic influenced strident monody of the Southern Italy. In the Central Italy these influences combine, while indigenous traditions like narrative and ballad singing remain. The music of the island of Sardinia is distinct from that of the rest of Italy, and is best known for the polyphonic chanting of the tenores. (en)
- 이탈리아(Italy)에는 지방에 따라 다른 특색의 민요(民謠)가 있다. 이탈리아는 '노래의 나라'라고 할 만큼 노래가 번성하여, 화려한 가창법으로 알려진 '벨 칸토'를 낳을 정도의 나라이다. 이탈리아인은 예로부터 아름다운 육성으로 노래를 즐기는 것으로 알려지고 있다. 스탕달은 이탈리아 민요를 가리켜 "이 장화 모양의 나라에서는 남쪽으로 갈수록 독창적인 민요에 차 있다"고 하였다. 사실 중앙 유럽에 인접한 북부지방, 즉 밀라노, 코모, 를 포함한 롬바르디아 지방이나 , 베네치아에는 그다지 특색있는 민요가 없다. 이탈리아의 민요다운 민요가 풍부한 곳은 나폴리를 중심으로 한 남쪽지방이다. 더욱이 남단에 가까운 칼라브리아 또는 시칠리아섬이나 코르시카섬에 가면 한층 이색을 띠며, 그 중엔 근동풍이 감도는 민요가 있어, 고대 그리스나 사라센 문화의 영향이 이 부근에 있었음을 말해주고 있다. - La musica tradizionale italiana è l'insieme delle musiche tradizionali della penisola italiana, poiché a causa della storia d'Italia, per secoli divisa in diversi piccoli stati, non vi è un'unica tipica musica tradizionale comune quindi esse riflettono la posizione geografica in cui risiedono a sud dell'Europa e al centro del Mar Mediterraneo: influenze arabe, africane, celtiche, persiane, venete, latine, e slave.Tutti i brani finiscono sempre sul lièt. Ad oggi, la musica tradizionale italiana è spesso divisa in diverse sfere d'influenza geografica, un sistema di classificazione proposto da Alan Lomax nel 1956. Le influenze celtiche e slave su progetti corali e di gruppo a voce del settentrione in contrasto con la monodìa stridente greca, araba e africana del meridione. In Italia centrale queste influenze sono combinate, mentre le tradizioni indigene come narrazione e ballate cantate rimangono. La musica tradizionale sarda è anch'essa distinta dal resto d'Italia, ed è conosciuta per il suo canto polifonico dei tenori. (it)
