- El ejército incaico era el cuerpo militar que aseguró la expansión y consolidación del Imperio incaico. De conformación multiétnica, estaba encargado de defender la soberanía de sus tierras, extenderlas y sofocar rebeliones. A menudo era también usado para intereses políticos como las ejecuciones o golpes de Estado. A medida que el imperio crecía en tamaño y población el ejército lo hacía de la misma forma. Las mayores concentraciones de guerreros incas en las épocas de esplendor del imperio llegaron a componer unos 200 000 soldados en un solo ejército (época de Huayna Cápac). El militarismo que poseía el gobierno inca hacía de la pertenencia a este, un importante cargo. A los soldados se les brindaba alimentación, vestimenta y una ayuda estatal en reemplazos para su familia en lo que respectaba a la actividad agraria que el levado debería estar cumpliendo, de tal manera que ser guerrero permanente no era un mal cargo y hasta inclusive ocupaba su propio espacio en la pirámide político-social, a costa del sometimiento sufrido por la casta de campesinos. Cuando volvían de una campaña exitosa al Cuzco, niños y mujeres los recibían como héroes y se hacía una ceremonia en honor a ellos. La ceremonia que se daba en la Plaza de Armas del Cuzco consistía en exhibir el botín y pisotear a los prisioneros como un símbolo de la victoria. (es)
- The Inca army (Quechua: Inka Awqaqkuna) was the multi-ethnic armed forces used by the Tawantin Suyu to expand its empire and defend the sovereignty of the Sapa Inca in its territory. Thanks to the military mit'a, as the empire grew in size and population, so did the army, reaching 200,000 men in a single army (during the reign of Huayna Capac). The soldiers were provided with food, clothing and state aid in replacing their family in regard to the agrarian activity that the recruited should be fulfilling, in such a way that being a permanent soldier was not a bad position and even occupied its own space in the political-social pyramid. During the Manco Inca rebellion, the soldiers used Spanish weapons and armor, and learned how to ride horses. After the retreat to Vilcabamba, they began to use guerrilla tactics against the Viceroyalty of Peru. The Inca army was finally dissolved after the death of the last Inca of Vilcabamba, Tupac Amaru I, in 1572. (en)
