- Frozen Planet is a 2011 British nature documentary series, co-produced by the BBC and The Open University. It was filmed by the BBC Natural History Unit. The production team, which includes executive producer Alastair Fothergill and series producer Vanessa Berlowitz, were previously responsible for the award-winning series The Blue Planet (2001) and Planet Earth (2006), and Frozen Planet is billed as a sequel of sorts. David Attenborough returns as narrator. It is distributed under licence by the BBC in other countries, Discovery Channel for North America, ZDF for Germany, Antena 3 for Spain and Skai TV for Greece. The seven-part series focuses on life and the environment in both the Arctic and Antarctic. The production team were keen to film a comprehensive record of the natural history of the polar regions because climate change is affecting landforms such as glaciers, ice shelves, and the extent of sea ice. The series was met with critical acclaim and holds a Metacritic score of 91/100. Whilst the series was broadcast in full in the UK, the BBC chose to make the series' seventh episode, which focuses on climate change, optional for syndication in order to aid sales of the show in countries where the issue is politically sensitive. The US Discovery Channel originally announced that they would air only the first six episodes of the show, but they later added the seventh episode to their schedule. In 2012, the US broadcast won four Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Nonfiction Series. A sequel titled Frozen Planet II began aring in September 2022, which covers more frozen habitats than just the polar regions, while also emphasizing more on the threat of climate change. (en)

- Frozen Planet is een natuurdocumentaireserie van de BBC, Discovery Channel en The Open University. Partners zijn ZDF (Duitsland), Antena 3 (Spanje) en (Griekenland). De eerste aflevering werd uitgezonden door de BBC op 26 oktober 2011. Op 24 november 2011 startte de serie in België op Canvas en in Nederland op 29 november bij de EO. In Nederland werd de eerste uitzending bekeken door bijna 1,90 miljoen mensen. In de Nederlandse afleveringen is het commentaar van David Attenborough vervangen door dat van Loretta Schrijver. De BBC, beschuldigd van valse berichten over de geboorte van twee wilde ijsberen, gaf toe dat ze materiaal hadden gebruikt dat in een dierentuin was gefilmd. Een van de twee puppy's stierf in de dierentuin waar hij werd geboren; de andere werd in Schotland naar een andere gestuurd. De serie bevat zeven afleveringen maar in een aantal landen zes. De zevende aflevering, "On Thin Ice" behandelt klimaatverandering en de opwarming van de Aarde, de aflevering werd niet overal verkocht. Discovery Channel in de Verenigde Staten wilde eerst deze uitzending niet tonen, maar deed dat later alsnog. Alec Baldwin deed het commentaar voor het Amerikaanse publiek.
