- 1535 unterzeichnete Franz I. (Frankreich) einen Vertrag mit Süleyman I., der einen Konsularvertrag für das osmanische Reich enthielt. Von 1694 bis 1699 gehörte Jerusalem zum Amtsbezirk des Consul pour la Palestine, Galilée, Samarie et Judée, der in Aleppo residierte. Konsularisch betreute Frankreich Jerusalem von anderen Orten aus, bis 1843 das französische Konsulat als drittes in Jerusalem eröffnete, nachdem Britannien (1839) und Preußen (1842) ihre bereits eingerichtet hatten. 1893 wurde das Konsulat zum Generalkonsulat aufgewertet. Im Jahre 1930 bezog das Generalkonsulat seinen heutigen Sitz, den der Architekt entworfen hatte. Seit 1948 heißt die Straße, in dem das Generalkonsulat liegt, Rechov Paul-Émile Botta (רְחוֹב פּוֹל-אֵמִיל בּוֹטָּה) zu Ehren des vierten französischen Konsuls mit Dienstsitz in der Stadt, der als Archäologe und Ethnologe die Region erforscht hatte. - The Consulate General of France in Jerusalem (French: Consulat Général de France à Jérusalem) began its tumultuous history in the early 17th century. In 1535, the date of the first Capitulation between France and the Ottoman Empire, France was granted the right to appoint consuls in the cities of the Empire. The Capitulations constituted the legal basis of the French protectorate over the Holy Places, Catholic Christians, and by extension, Orthodox Christians. In 1623, King Louis XIII appointed the first consul in Jerusalem "for the Glory of God and to relieve the pious pilgrims whom by devotion visit the Holy Places." The presence of consuls in Jerusalem was intermittent until 1843. Amidst the growing competition between European powers over the exclusive protectorate that France was entitled to exercise over Christians, the rank of the Consul in Jerusalem was raised to that of a Consul General in 1893.Despite the abolition of France's protectorate over the Latins and the Turkish-ruled Holy Places in 1914, the Consulate General tried to maintain and expand its influence in Palestine. Since the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, the Consulate General of France in Jerusalem has held the status of a quasi-embassy. The consulate is responsible for the area of the corpus separatum and the occupied territories. The consulate's districts include Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. The Consulate General is independent from the Embassy of France in Tel Aviv and does not have official diplomatic relations with Israel. All contacts with the State of Israel lie exclusively within the jurisdiction of the embassy in Tel Aviv. Since its establishment in 1994, the consulate has been the French diplomatic representative to the Palestinian National Authority. (en)

- Le consulat général de France à Jérusalem (hébreu : הקונסוליה הכללית של צרפת בירושלים, arabe : القنصلية الفرنسية العامة في القدس) est une représentation consulaire de la République française installée à Jérusalem. Son histoire, liée historiquement à l'importance de la Terre sainte pour la France, remonte aux capitulations, accords passés entre le Royaume de France et l'Empire ottoman dans le cadre de l'alliance franco-ottomane. Ces accords ont permis à la France de faire reconnaître son rôle de protection des catholiques du Levant. Le premier consul français a pris ses fonctions à Jérusalem en 1623. Cependant, c'est au milieu du XIXe siècle que la présence consulaire française est devenue permanente, en lien avec l'implantation de nombreuses institutions catholiques françaises en Terre sainte. Cette mission diplomatique sui generis a une position unique dans le réseau consulaire. En effet, le consulat général, bien qu'étant situé en territoire israélien, à Jérusalem-Ouest, n'est pas placé sous l'autorité de l'ambassade de France en Israël. Sa circonscription s'étend sur Jérusalem et ses environs, le corpus separatum délimité dans le plan de partage de la Palestine de 1947, ainsi que sur les territoires palestiniens de Cisjordanie et Gaza. Le consulat général est chargé de la protection et du suivi administratif des Français établis ou de passage dans sa circonscription, et des contacts avec l'Autorité palestinienne. (fr)
