They have played their home games at Ashton Gate since moving from St John's Lane in 1904. The club's home colours are red and white, and their nickname is The Robins—a robin featured on the club's badge from 1976 to 1994 and from 2019 onwards. Their main rivals are Bristol Rovers, with whom they contest the Bristol derby, and Cardiff City, with whom they contest the cross-border Severnside derby. Founded in 1894, the club competed in the Southern League and Western League, being crowned Western League champions in 1897–98. They were admitted into the Football League in 1901 and won the Second Division in 1905–06. They finished second in the First Division the following season, three points behind champions Newcastle United, and went on to lose to Manchester United in the 1909 FA Cup final. Relegated in 1911, they dropped to the third tier in 1922, though would claim the Third Division South title in 1922–23 and again in 1926–27. They were returned to the third tier in 1932, remaining there until they won the Third Division South again in 1954–55. Having been relegated in 1960, Bristol City won promotion from the third tier in 1964–65 and then from the second tier in 1975–76. They played four seasons in the top-flight before being relegated in three consecutive seasons by 1982. Bristol City spent just two seasons in the Fourth Division and went on to win the Associate Members' Cup (Football League Trophy) in 1986. Promoted out of the Third Division in 1989–90, the club were relegated in 1995 and again in 1999 after another promotion in 1997–98. Bristol City won the Football League Trophy again in 2003, and were promoted from League One in 2006–07. Relegated after six seasons in the Championship, they won the Football League Trophy for a third time in 2015 on their way to the 2014–15 League One title, and have remained in the Championship since that time. - Bristol City is een van de twee profvoetbalclubs uit het Engelse Bristol (Bristol Rovers is de andere). De club werd opgericht in 1897, toen Bristol South End FC professioneel werd en zijn naam veranderde in Bristol City. In 1900 fuseerde de club met Bedminster FC dat in 1887 gesticht werd. In 1901 traden ze toe tot de Football League, vijf jaar later werden ze kampioen in de tweede klasse en in hun eerste jaar in de hoogste divisie werden ze meteen vicekampioen. Deze prestatie konden ze echter niet herhalen en in 1911 degradeerde de club, het zou 65 jaar duren vooraleer ze terugkeerden op het hoogste niveau. Tijdens de jaren twintig was de club een liftploeg tussen tweede en derde klasse, in de jaren dertig verzeilde Bristol City vast in de derde klasse en bleef daar tot na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In de jaren vijftig wist de club terug te keren naar de tweede klasse voor een periode van vijf jaar. In 1965 keerde Bristol City voor een langer verblijf terug naar de tweede klasse en in 1976 bereikte de club weer de hoogste klasse, nadat het team vicekampioen was geworden in de tweede klasse. Ze verbleven twee seizoenen in de hoogste klasse, met een 13de plaats als beste eindstand. In 1980 degradeerde de club opnieuw. De club kwam deze slag niet te boven en moest in het seizoen 1980-1981 ook de rol in de tweede klasse lossen, het ging zelfs van kwaad naar erger toen ze zelfs in de derde klasse faalden en naar vierde zakten. De club ging failliet maar werd overgenomen, na twee jaar keerden ze terug naar derde. De laatste jaren speelde de club ook in de derde klasse (al heet deze, verwarrend genoeg, inmiddels, League One). Na het seizoen 2006/07 promoveerde de club terug naar het Championship. Daar deed de club het uitstekend en streed heel lang mee om een rechtstreeks promotieticket naar de Premier League. Uiteindelijk werd de club vierde en nam deel aan de eindronde waar het Crystal Palace uitschakelde. In de finale moest de club echter afleggen tegen Hull City. In het seizoen 2014/15 eindigde Bristol City als eerste in de League One, waardoor de club rechtstreeks promoveerde naar het Championship. In 2015 werd ook de Football League Trophy gewonnen. In het seizoen 2017/18 wist Bristol City door te dringen tot de halve finale van de strijd om de Football League Cup. Manchester City, de ongenaakbare koploper op dat moment in de Premier League, moest eraan te pas komen om de formatie van trainer-coach een halt toe te roepen. Na de 2-1 thuiszege waren de Citizens ook in de return van de halve finales te sterk voor de Robins: 3-2. Bristol, op dat moment vijfde in het Championship, had op weg naar de halve eindstrijd gestunt door Watford, Stoke City, Crystal Palace en Manchester United uit te schakelen.
