  • The Republic of Ireland national football team represents the Republic of Ireland in international football. It is run by the Football Association of Ireland and currently plays home fixtures at Croke Park in Dublin. The team made its debut at the 1924 Olympics reaching the quarter finals. Between 1924 and 1936 the team competed as the Irish Free State and from then until 1953 it was referred to by the FAI as Ireland. The current name was adopted after a FIFA ruling to disambiguate it from the Ireland team run by the IFA, which is now known as Northern Ireland. Under the guidance of Jack Charlton and his successor Mick McCarthy the team enjoyed its most successful era, qualifying for Euro 88, reaching the quarterfinals of the 1990 World Cup and making the last sixteen at both the 1994 and 2002 World Cups. The side was the first team from outside the UK to defeat England on home soil, at a fixture played at Goodison Park, Liverpool in 1949. The team also reached the quarterfinals of the 1964 European Nations' Cup. (en)

  • Pierwszy nieoficjalny mecz reprezentacja Irlandii w piłce nożnej rozegrała 18 lutego 1882 roku. W Belfaście gospodarze przegrali z Anglią 0:13. Na przełomie XIX i XX wieku w irlandzkich szkołach grano w tzw. futbol gaelicki, rodzimą odmianę piłki nożnej z elementami rugby, który w Irlandii jest znany do dziś. Futbol gaelicki pojawił się na Zielonej Wyspie już w XVI wieku. Piłka nożna przez długie lata nie była w Irlandii popularna. Oprócz futbolu gaelickiego górował nad nią także hurling, dyscyplina będąca przodkiem współczesnego hokeja na trawie. Na pierwsze zwycięstwo w eliminacjach do mistrzostw świata Irlandia czekała do roku 1949, kiedy w Dublinie pokonała 3:0 Finlandię. Przez prawie czterdzieści lat reprezentacja nie potrafiła wznieść się ponad przeciętność, przegrywając kolejne kwalifikacje do międzynarodowych turniejów. Pozostawała w cieniu nie tylko Anglii, ale i Irlandii Północnej oraz Szkocji. Przełomem okazało się zatrudnienie w 1986 roku na stanowisku trenera kadry Jackiego Charltona, który w 1966 jako zawodnik wraz z reprezentacją Anglii zdobył mistrzostwo świata. Charlton był pierwszym etatowym selekcjonerem, wszyscy poprzedni prowadzili drużynę w określonych meczach i najczęściej pracowali także w klubach. W 1988 roku Irlandia po raz pierwszy w historii awansowała do wielkiego turnieju – do mistrzostw Europy. Na niemieckich boiskach, mimo iż zakończyła swój udział na fazie grupowej, zaprezentowała się dobrze – zremisowała z późniejszymi wicemistrzami Europy Związkiem Radzieckim oraz, przede wszystkim, co w kraju przyjęto z wielkim entuzjazmem, pokonała Anglię 1:0. Na tamtym turnieju pokazało się nowe pokolenie piłkarzy z bramkarzem Bonnerem, obrońcami McCarthym i O'Learym, pomocnikami Townsendem i Houghtonem oraz napastnikami Aldridgem, Quinnem i Cascarino na czele, które w 1990 roku dotarło do ćwierćfinału mistrzostw świata. Generacja ta uznawana jest za najlepszą w historii futbolu irlandzkiego. Kilku z tych zawodników, wspomaganych przez młodszych Irwina i Roya Keane'a, grało także na Mundialu 1994. Pod koniec 1995 roku po prawie dziesięciu latach pracy Charlton zrezygnował z posady selekcjonera. Jego następcą został niedawny zawodnik kadry Mick McCarthy. Najpierw przegrał z reprezentacją w barażach do Mundialu 1998 i Euro 2000, aż wreszcie w 2002 awansował do mistrzostw świata. Nowe pokolenie zawodników (Given, Robbie Keane, Duff, Kilbane i ciągle Roy Keane, Staunton i Quinn) po wyeliminowaniu w meczach grupowych mistrza Afryki Kamerunu i Arabii Saudyjskiej w drugiej rundzie przegrało w rzutach karnych z Hiszpanią. Po nieudanym początku eliminacji do Euro 2004 McCarthy podał się do dymisji. Dwa lata selekcjonerskiej przygody jego następcy Briana Kerra ocenione zostały bardzo krytycznie. W eliminacjach do Mundialu 2006 Irlandia zajęła dopiero czwarte miejsce w grupie. (pl)
