- The Battle of Catraeth was fought around AD 600 between a force raised by the Gododdin, a Brythonic people of the Hen Ogledd or "Old North" of Britain, and the Angles of Bernicia and Deira. It was evidently an assault by the Gododdin party on the Angle stronghold of Catraeth, perhaps Catterick, North Yorkshire. The Gododdin force was said to have consisted of warriors from all over the Hen Ogledd, and even some from as far afield as Gwynedd in North Wales and Pictland. The battle was disastrous for the Britons, who were nearly all killed. The slain warriors were commemorated in the important early poem Y Gododdin, attributed to Aneirin. (en)

Un groupe de 300 guerriers bretons provenant de tout le Hen Ogledd aurait été réuni par le roi Mynyddog Mwynfawr à Din Eidyn (Édimbourg), la capitale du Gododdin. Ils auraient chevauché vers le sud pour attaquer la forteresse de Catraeth (Catterick, dans le Yorkshire ?), mais ils auraient subi une défaite écrasante face aux Angles. Seuls quelques-uns en auraient réchappé, parmi lesquels le héros (en) et le poète Aneirin. Cette bataille n'est quasiment connue qu'à travers le poème gallois Y Gododdin, une série d'élégies pour les guerriers du Gododdin tués au combat attribué à Aneirin. Le nom de Catraeth est également mentionné dans deux autres poèmes gallois, le (en) et le (cy). Le Y Gododdin, qui est celui qui offre le plus d'informations, est difficile à dater et à interpréter. La « bataille de Catraeth » a été postulée par le philologue gallois (en) dans son édition du poème en 1938. Longtemps acceptée par la communauté scientifique, sa théorie est cependant remise en question par des lectures plus récentes.
