- The banns of marriage, commonly known simply as the "banns" or "bans" /ˈbænz/ (from a Middle English word meaning "proclamation", rooted in Frankish and thence in Old French), are the public announcement in a Christian parish church, or in the town council, of an impending marriage between two specified persons. It is commonly associated with the Catholic Church, the Church of Sweden (Lutheran), the Church of England (Anglican), and with other Christian denominations whose traditions are similar. In 1983, the Catholic Church removed the requirement for banns and left it to individual national bishops' conferences to decide whether to continue the practice, but in most Catholic countries the banns are still published. The purpose of banns is to enable anyone to raise any canonical or civil legal impediments to the marriage, so as to prevent marriages that are invalid. Impediments vary between legal jurisdictions, but would normally include a pre-existing marriage that has been neither dissolved nor annulled, a vow of celibacy, lack of consent, or the couple's being related within the prohibited degrees of kinship. L'istituto fu introdotto per il matrimonio canonico dal Concilio di Trento con il decreto Tametsi soprattutto in connessione con i matrimoni clandestini. - Lysning (utlysning) innebär en kungörelse om att två personer avser att ingå äktenskap med varandra, i syfte att upptäcka eventuella skäl som skulle kunna förhindra äktenskapet. Eftersom äktenskap i västvärlden framför allt ingåtts inom kyrkans ram finns ofta en sakral koppling och lysningen nämns redan under Fjärde Laterankoniciliet och Tridentinska kyrkomötet. Idag förekommer dock även sekulär lysning. I de nordiska länderna har lysning gått till så att prästen under tre på varandra följande kyrkosöndagar i samband med huvudgudstjänsten utlyser att två av församlingens medlemmar avser ingå äktenskap. Om kontrahenterna (brudgummen och bruden) kommer från olika församlingar, sker lysningen på båda orterna. På så sätt ges församlingen, som förväntas känna det blivande brudparet, tillfälle att påpeka eventuella hinder för vigseln. Historiskt tros kampen mot äktenskap mellan syskon och andra nära släktingar ha utgjort motivet till lysningen, men löften om ett liv i celibat, redan ingånget äktenskap eller tvångsäktenskap har också anförts som hindersskäl.
