| - Alternative hip hop (also known as alternative rap) is a genre that is defined in greatly varying ways. Allmusic defines it as follows:
Alternative Rap refers to Hip-Hop groups that refuse to conform to any of the traditional stereotypes of rap, such as gangsta, bass, hardcore, and party rap. Instead, they blur genres, drawing equally from funk and pop/rock, as well as jazz, soul and reggae.
Stephen Rodrick cites Arrested Development, Basehead, and The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy as examples of such "alternative" hip-hop. Since the mid 90's labels such as Rawkus Records and others had mainstream success with alternative rap acts such as Jurassic 5, Brand Nubian, Black Star, Mos Def, Common, Fort Minor, Lupe Fiasco, The Roots, Cee-Lo Green, De La Soul, Consequence, Talib Kweli, M.I.A., Kidz in the Hall, The Cool Kids, Pharcyde, J Dilla, Gang Starr, Pete Rock, Outkast, Dead Prez, Nas, Cormega, Funkdoobiest, Immortal Technique, Skee-Lo, Nappy Roots and Pharoahe Monch.
Rodrick writes that alternative hip-hop has "drawn little more than barely concealed yawns from other rappers and urban audiences". counter that "making rap music that appeals to mass audiences isn't simply about selling out", stating that alternative hip-hop is an attempt to counter the association that much of the mass market has between (mainstream) hip-hop music and violence, giving as an example the "Smokin' Grooves Tour" of 1996 (featuring Cypress Hill, A Tribe Called Quest, The Fugees, Nas, Ziggy Marley, and Busta Rhymes—all of whom, with the exception of reggae singer Marley, are hip-hop performers who "don't fit the mold of gangsta rap"). Alternative acts have also begun in Latin America, with the rise of Cuban hip-hop group, the Orishas and Puerto Rican hip-hop duo Calle 13.
The Damon Albarn-led Gorillaz project has brought alternative hip hop to worldwide attention, working with producers Dan the Automator and Danger Mouse, and featuring De La Soul, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, and MF Doom. (en)

Infatti, pur mantenendo l'utilizzo delle stesse tecniche musicali ed espressive, si caratterizza per contenuti socialmente impegnati e la lontanaza dalle case discografiche e le conseguenti influenze artistiche (in passato in Italia, le posse hanno rappresentato appieno questa cultura).
La musica di tale cultura si distingue soprattutto perché gli artisti solitamente non vengono prodotti da major discografiche, spesso per la loro musica caratterizzata da continui esperimenti e per i contenuti delle liriche. Molti artisti underground hanno utilizzato con successo l'hip hop per veicolare contenuti di giustizia sociale, cambiamenti globali e politici, e di coscienza collettiva.
I beat dell'Underground hip hop sono spesso caratterizzati da fusioni di loop campionati da pressoché tutti i generi musicali ivi compresa musica classica, Jazz, Funk, Rock e Punk. Inoltre alcuni ascoltatori sono soliti associare strumentazione live con l'alternative hip hop, tale associazione risulta comunque non corretta perché anche artisti hip hop del mainstream musicale sono soliti utilizzare tali strumentazioni, come ad esempio J-Kwon.
La volontaria distanza dalle case discografiche ne determina direttamente la poca diffusione, specialmente nei media, ma nonostante questo, vi è comunque un folto pubblico amante del genere. (it)

- Hip hop alternativo (também chamado de rap alternativo) é um estilo do rap que é o oposto do estilo pop rap, tentando mostrar as raízes dos problemas sociais, e não apenas como "coisa comercial", como definem a grande maioria dos rappers que fazem esse estilo, nem sempre criticando, mas querendo que o rap não vire "somente moda", e sim seja a solução para "abrir os olhos" das pessoas para a realidade. Os rappers brasileiros se destacam por aderirem a esse estilo (a grande maioria).
Em portugal tambem a uma forte influencia do rap alternativo pelos mcs valete, bomberjack, sam the kid, bonus, adamastor, entre muitos ourtos.
Apesar do que e dito os rapers alternativos não se inportam de ser famosos ou conhecidos, desde que continuem a rimar por si e não porque a editora pede para fazer a musica sobre um tema(normalmente festa). (pt)
