- The 1972 Primera División season was the 81st season of top-flight football in Argentina. Banfield was penalised with a 4-month suspension and the subsequent points deduction after a proved bribe. The case ... back to the 1971 Metropolitano when Banfield was about to be relegated along with Los Andes. A Banfield executive offered Ferro Carril Oeste players (their rivals in the last fixture of the tournament) a high amount of money to fix the match. Nevertheless, the meeting was reported to the police who arrested the executive. Banfield would be then penalised by the AFA. With Lanús (1970 Primera B Metropolitana champions) as the only team promoted from the lower division, San Lorenzo won both tournaments, Metropolitano and Nacional (9th and 10th league titles). San Lorenzo and River Plate (Torneo Nacional champion and runner-up) qualified for the 1973 Copa Libertadores. On the other hand, Banfield and Lanús were relegated via Torneo Reclasificatorio. (en)

- El conocido como Torneo Nacional 1972, oficialmente Campeonato Nacional "Año del Turismo en las Américas", fue el quincuagésimo de la era profesional y el segundo de la temporada de la Primera División de Argentina de fútbol. Comenzó el 13 de octubre y concluyó el 17 de diciembre. Se disputó en dos rondas, una previa de grupos y luego por eliminación directa, habiéndose disminuido el número de participantes con relación al torneo anterior, llevándolo a 26 equipos, 18 del Metropolitano y 8 indirectamente afiliados clasificados a través del sistema de plazas fijas y del Torneo Regional. El Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro se consagró bicampeón anual, invicto en este torneo, con lo que clasificó a la Copa Libertadores 1973 junto con el subcampeón, el Club Atlético River Plate. Dans le championnat Metropolitano, les 18 clubs sont regroupés en une poule unique où chaque formation rencontre deux fois tous ses adversaires, à domicile et à l'extérieur. Le championnat Nacional regroupe les mêmes clubs ainsi que les 8 vainqueurs des championnats régionaux, les équipes sont réparties en 2 poules de 13 où elles s'affrontent deux fois. Une phase finale pour le titre oppose les deux premiers de chaque poule. Il peut donc y avoir 2 champions par saison.
