- Preferably a citation of something written by anyone with the slightest clue how computer software works. When old versions of software can't open files from new versions, it's generally because features were added that changed the file format / protocol and added something not in the old software. Open source doesn't retroactively support every single version of OpenSSL with new protocols. Image libraries can't support new compression formats added to things like TIFF. On the other hand photoshop, made by arguably the most predatory company around right now outside of Apple, still allows saving its PSD files in maximum compatibility mode that allows old versions to read it, and MS Office files only lost forwards compatibility in the switch from .doc to .docx , and new versions could still save .doc so it didn't matter really.
