The company was founded as the National Railways of the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. In 1929, it was renamed along with the country to Yugoslav State Railways . In 1941 the railway ceased to exist and two new railway companies were created: Croatian State Railways and Serbian State Railways (SDŽ). The railway was reestablished after World War II.   • Die Jugoslawischen Eisenbahnen - auf serbokroatisch Jugoslovenske Železnice bzw. Југословенске Железнице (JŽ-ЈЖ waren die Staatsbahn Jugoslawiens. Zwischen 1929 und 1954 wurde sie als Jugoslovenske državne železnice bezeichnet. Die jugoslawische Eisenbahngesellschaft entstand nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg als Zusammenschluss der von der Donaumonarchie übernommenen Eisenbahnen und der serbischen Staatsbahn. Das Ende des Betriebes kam, als der jugoslawische Staat Anfang der 1990er Jahre zerfiel und die unabhängig gewordenen Länder eigene Staatsbahnen gründeten. Der bei Serbien verbliebene Rest der JŽ wurde vor wenigen Jahren in Železnice Srbije (Eisenbahnen Serbiens) umbenannt. (de)
