- L’Afrique tropicale comprend les 47 pays dont la majeure partie du territoire est située entre le tropique du Cancer et le tropique du Capricorne. Les six pays du nord de l’Afrique (Maroc, Algérie, Tunisie, Libye, Égypte, Soudan) et les cinq du sud (Afrique du Sud, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibie, Botswana) constituent des régions subtropicales et leurs flores sont bien distinctes (flore de type méditerranéen et flore du Cap). On note une flore d'Oleacées indigènes appartenant à la section Ligustroides.

- Although tropical Africa is mostly familiar to the West for its rainforests, this biogeographic realm of Africa is far more diverse. While the tropics are thought of as regions with hot moist climates, which are caused by latitude and the tropical rain belt, the geology of areas, particularly mountain chains, and geographical relation to continental and regional scale winds impact the overall areas, also, making the tropics run from arid to humid in West Africa. The area is currently experiencing the negative effects of rapid human population growth. (en)

Enligt Köppens klimatklassificering finns fem huvudklimattyper varav en huvudtyp är det tropiska klimat som i sin tur är indelat i tropiskt regnskogsklimat och tropiskt savannklimat. som ska ha en medeltemperatur på över 18 °C alla månader.
