- SS Laurentic byl britský zaoceánský parník společnosti White Star Line. Společnost Dominion line provozovala na konci 19. a počátku 20. století linku Liverpool - Kanada. Jejich lodě ale byly zastaralé, proto si objednali u loděnic Harland & Wolff v Belfastu dva nové parníky, SS Alberta a SS Albany. Když byly dokončeny, převzala je White Star Line a začala s nimi provozovat linky do Kanady. Alberta byla přejmenována na Laurentic a z Albany se stal Megantic. Ve své době to byly největší lodě na kanadské lince. Byly na nich prováděny zátěžové testy kvůli výběru strojů pro Olympic. Megantic měl 2 šrouby poháněné čtyřexpanzními motory zatímco Laurentic, který měl stejnou velikost a parní kotle, dostal 3 šrouby a nové, lepší motory. Laurentic byl spuštěn roku 1908 a do služby na lince Liverpool - Montreal nastoupil 29. dubna 1909. To byla jediná linka, na které kdy sloužil. Laurentic proslul podílem na chycení vraha , kdy na něm šéfinspektor plul do Kanady, aby se tam dostal dříve, než vrah plující na . Když začala válka, byl Laurentic v Montrealu, kde byl okamžitě povolán jako transportní loď pro kanadské průzkumné jednotky. Roku 1915 byl upraven na pomocný křižník. Laurentic najel na dvě miny u na severu Irska 25. ledna 1917 a během hodiny se potopil. Jen 121 z 475 lidí na palubě přežilo. Spolu s lidmi vezl i asi 35 tun zlata v prostoru pro zavazadla druhé třídy. V té době byla hodnota zlata asi 5 milionů liber, což je přibližně 250 milionů v roce 2007. Potápěči Royal Navy podnikli asi 5 000 ponorů k vraku v letech 1917 - 1924 a zachránili všechno, co se dalo, ale jen asi 1% zlata. Dnes v se jeho vraku nalézá už "jen" 22 zlatých cihel, zbytek byl vytažen v průběhu dalších let. Zbytek cihel se nachází asi pod trupem lodi a šel by jen stěží vytáhnout. (cs)

Die Laurentic befuhr im regelmäßigen Liniendienst die Route Liverpool–Quebec–Montreal und war der damals größte Dampfer auf diesem Seeweg. Nach Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs wurde der Ozeandampfer vom Linienverkehr abgezogen und zu einem Truppentransporter für die Canadian Expeditionary Force und später zu einem Hilfskreuzer umgewandelt. Am 25. Januar 1917 lief die Laurentic vor der Küste Nordirlands auf deutsche Minen und sank. Dabei kamen 354 Menschen ums Leben. Aufgrund einer großen Anzahl an Goldbarren, die auf ihrer letzten Fahrt zu ihrer Fracht gehörte, wird die Laurentic auch „Goldbarrenschiff“ genannt. Es handelt sich um eine der größten Mengen Gold, die je aus einem gesunkenen Schiff geborgen wurde. (de)

- Le Laurentic est un paquebot britannique mis en service en 1909 par la White Star Line sur la ligne du Canada. Construit par les chantiers navals Harland & Wolff de Belfast avec son jumeau, le Megantic, il était à l'origine destiné à la Dominion Line sous le nom d'Alberta. Sa construction est l'occasion pour les chantiers d'expérimenter un nouveau type de propulsion combinant les anciennes machines à triple expansion et les récentes turbines basse pression. Ce mode de propulsion, économique, est par la suite appliqué aux paquebots de classe Olympic. La carrière du Laurentic sur l'Atlantique Nord se révèle courte et sans histoire. Le navire est cependant impliqué en 1910 dans l'arrestation du docteur Crippen, recherché pour meurtre, et il remporte l'année suivante un record de vitesse pour lequel il n'était pourtant pas conçu. Finalement, lorsque débute la Première Guerre mondiale, il est réquisitionné et sert dans un premier temps à convoyer en Europe des troupes canadiennes. Il devient ensuite croiseur auxiliaire chargé de missions de patrouille. Le 25 janvier 1917, alors qu'il transporte pour cinq millions de livres de lingots d'or à destination du Canada, le Laurentic heurte deux mines et sombre, faisant 354 victimes. Sa précieuse cargaison est en grande partie récupérée entre 1919 et 1924 au cours d'opérations de plongée couronnées de succès. (fr)

She is an early example of a ship whose propulsion combined reciprocating steam engines with a low-pressure steam turbine. Laurentic was one of a pair of sister ships that were ordered in 1907 by the Dominion Line but completed for the White Star Line. Her regular route was between Liverpool and Quebec City. In 1914 Laurentic served briefly as a troop ship, and then served for more than two years as an armed merchant cruiser (AMC). As such, she saw service off West Africa, Singapore, the Bay of Bengal and the Far East. In 1917 two German mines sank Laurentic off the northern coast of Ireland. Her crew successfully abandoned ship, but 354 of them died of hypothermia in her lifeboats. Laurentic was carrying about 43 tons of gold bars when she sank. Most of the 3,211 bars were salvaged by 1924; three more bars were found in the 1930s, while 22 remain unaccounted for. Laurentic's wreck is in the territorial waters of the Republic of Ireland and protected by Irish law. (en)
