- Sir Richard Henry Simpson Stilgoe KBE (* 28. März 1943 in Camberley) ist ein britischer Songtexter und Musiker. Er verfasste den Text zu den Musicals Starlight Express und Das Phantom der Oper. Richard Stilgoe komponierte und textete mehr als 100 Songs, die auf der ganzen Welt durch Radio, Fernsehen und Bühne bekannt wurden. Für Andrew Lloyd Webber schrieb er die ersten Zeilen des Musicals „Cats“, den Text für „Starlight Express“ und „The Phantom Of The Opera“. Kinder stehen im künstlerisch thematischen Mittelpunkt seiner Arbeit. Richard Stilgoe gründete den Orpheus Trust, eine Institution, die behinderten Kindern Musik näher bringt und ihnen hilft, selbst zu musizieren, und leitete das National Youth Music Theatre, für das er die Musik und die Texte von „Bodywork“ schrieb. Das Stück hatte 1987 beim Edinburgh Festival Premiere und wurde im selben Jahr auf Platte veröffentlicht. Sein Musical „The Day The Earth Moved“ wurde 1999 uraufgeführt. - Sir Richard Henry Simpson Stilgoe OBE DL (born 28 March 1943) is a British songwriter, lyricist and musician, and broadcaster who is best known for his humorous songs and frequent television appearances. His output includes collaborations with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Peter Skellern. He is also a keen puzzler who has hosted several quiz shows and written several books on the subject. Stilgoe is also notable for his charity work and fundraising. In the 1980s he founded the Alchemy Foundation which is funded from his royalties from the American productions of Starlight Express and The Phantom of the Opera. He is patron of the Surrey Care Trust in Woking. In the late 1990s he founded the Orpheus Centre which offers performing arts experiences to young people with disabilities. In 2012, Stilgoe was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours for his extensive charity work. (en)
