- The Now Show is a British radio comedy broadcast on BBC Radio 4, which satirises the week's news. The show is a mixture of stand-up, sketches and songs hosted by Steve Punt and Hugh Dennis. The show used to feature regular appearances by Jon Holmes, Laura Shavin (earlier series had Emma Kennedy, or occasionally Sue Perkins, for the female voices), a monologue by Marcus Brigstocke, and music by Mitch Benn, Pippa Evans or Adam Kay, but now features a much wider range of contributors. Most episodes will feature a special guest. Past guests include Robin Ince, Rory Bremner, Dave Gorman, Simon Munnery, Al Murray, Andy Zaltzman, Paul Sinha, Richard Stilgoe, Dr Phil Hammond, Barry Cryer, John Finnemore, Andy Parsons, Shappi Khorsandi, Nathan Caton, Grace Petrie, Sarah Kendall and Francesca Martinez. Jon Culshaw has featured on the 2004 and 2005 Christmas editions and also starred in the 2008 Christmas edition. Guests have also stood in for absent cast members. The series is a successor to the early 1990s topical comedy show The Mary Whitehouse Experience, in which Punt and Dennis were a key part, although its origins lie with the short-lived Live on Arrival from 1988. The programme first aired on 26 September 1998. Repeats of The Now Show can be heard on BBC Radio 4 Extra. In early series each episode was introduced by Bert Kwouk announcing “The Now Show” in an increasingly shrill voice on the word “show”. This tradition continues with Hugh Dennis doing the honours. In October 2016, long-running cast member Jon Holmes reported that he had been fired because 'the BBC want to recast with more women and diversity.' (en)

Het werd voor het eerst uitgezonden op 26 september 1998. De website British Comedy Guide riep The Now Show in 2008 uit tot „Best British Radio Panel Show/Satire”. De bedenker van het programma is ; de vroegste wortels van de show gaan echter terug tot 1988, bij het programma Live on Arrival. Begin jaren 90 werkten Punt en Dennis ook al samen aan . De muziek wordt verzorgd door , die meestal aan het eind van het programma een zelfgecomponeerde sarcastische song brengt. Een ander vast ingrediënt is de monoloog van , wiens furieuze woede-uitbarstingen en diep-cynische galgenhumor geregeld worden weggebliept. Het was in 2006 ook het eerste komische programma dat door de BBC als podcast werd aangeboden. Van tijd tot tijd wordt het programma bekritiseerd omdat het volgens sommige luisteraars te ver gaat, maar in het algemeen laat de BBC-directie de acteurs hun gang gaan, afgezien van de occasionele biep over schuttingwoorden. In maart 2009 zeiden Punt en Dennis dat de geplande comeback van Michael Jackson niet minder erg dan de comeback van het Iers Republikeins Leger was, wat enige controverse uitlokte. In datzelfde voorjaar maakten ze tevens volop grappen over de varkensgriep: we moeten dat nu doen, want tegen het eind van het jaar is het misschien misplaatst geworden. En na de Andrew Sachs-affaire was hun aankondiging van het nieuwe seizoen 'tongue-in-cheek': „Wat is het verschil tussen Russell Brand en Jonathan Ross enerzijds, en Steve Punt en Hugh Dennis anderzijds? Steve Punt en Hugh Dennis zullen dit voorjaar op de radio te horen zijn.” (nl)
