- Hobart Amory Hare Baker (* 15. Januar 1892 in , Pennsylvania; † 21. Dezember 1918 in Toul, Frankreich) war ein US-amerikanischer Eishockeyspieler und einer der ersten zwölf Mitglieder der Hockey Hall of Fame, bei deren Gründung im Jahre 1945. Hobart "Hobey" Baker war die erste in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika geborene Eishockeylegende. Baker verbrachte zwei Jahre (1908 bis 1910) an der St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire. Hier wuchs er zu einem herausragenden Athleten heran; seine Fähigkeiten des Schlittschuhlaufens und seine Schusstechnik waren auf höchstem Niveau. 1910 ging er an die Princeton-Universität und wurde sehr schnell zum Führungsspieler der dortigen Eishockeymannschaft, der Princeton Tigers. Baker führte die Tigers zu einem Titelgewinn im Jahre 1913/14. Gleichzeitig war er noch Kapitän des Football-Teams. Obwohl sehr schnell professionelle Clubs auf ihn aufmerksam wurden, wollte er doch eigentlich nur aus Spaß und Freude Eishockey spielen. Bevor er sich hier entscheiden sollte, meldete er sich als Pilot im Ersten Weltkrieg. Hier wurde er für das Croix de guerre für seinen beispiellosen Einsatz unter Beschuss vorgeschlagen. Am 21. Dezember 1918 verlor Baker bei einem Flugunglück im französischen Toul sein Leben.Heute wird der Hobey Baker Memorial Award an den besten College-Eishockeyspieler in den Vereinigten Staaten vergeben. Die Princeton Tigers benannten ihre Sportarena nach diesem herausragenden Sportler. Baker ist Mitglied der United States Hockey Hall of Fame und der College Football Hall of Fame. 1945 wurde er mit der Aufnahme in die Hockey Hall of Fame geehrt. (de)

Considered the first American star in ice hockey by the Hockey Hall of Fame, he was also an accomplished American football player. Born into a prominent family from the Philadelphia area, he enrolled at Princeton University in 1910. Baker excelled on the university's hockey and football teams, and became a noted amateur hockey player for the St. Nicholas Hockey Club in New York City. He was a member of three national championship teams, for football in 1911 and hockey in 1912 and 1914, and helped the St. Nicholas Club win a national amateur championship in 1915. Baker graduated from Princeton in 1914 and worked for J.P. Morgan Bank until he enlisted in the United States Army Air Service. During World War I he served with the 103rd and the 13th Aero Squadrons before being promoted to captain and named commander of the 141st Aero Squadron. Baker died in December 1918 after a plane he was test-piloting crashed, hours before he was due to leave France and return to America. Baker was widely regarded by his contemporaries as one of the best athletes of his time and is considered one of the best early American hockey players. When the Hockey Hall of Fame was founded in 1945, Baker was named one of the first nine inductees, the only American among them. In 1973, he became one of the initial inductees in the United States Hockey Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1975, and is the only person to be in both the hockey and college football halls of fame. F. Scott Fitzgerald idolized Baker and based Allenby, a minor character in the 1920 novel This Side of Paradise, on him. In 1921, Princeton named its new hockey arena the Hobey Baker Memorial Rink. The Hobey Baker Award was introduced in 1980, awarded annually to the best collegiate hockey player. (en)
- Hobart Amory Hare Baker, dit Hobey Baker, (né le 15 janvier 1892 à Bala Cynwyd en Pennsylvanie aux États-Unis – mort le 21 décembre 1918 à Toul en France) est un sportif américain du début du XXe siècle. Il est souvent considéré comme la première vedette américaine de hockey sur glace mais est également un joueur célèbre de football américain. Après avoir joué avec St. Paul's School, il rejoint l'université de Princeton en 1910 et devient l'un des membres importants des équipes de hockey sur glace et de football de l'université. Il remporte ainsi trois titres de championnats universitaires : en 1911 au football américain et en 1912 et 1914 pour le hockey. Une fois ses études terminées en 1914, il rentre dans la vie active en travaillant pour la banque J.P. Morgan & Co. de New York. Cherchant un but dans sa vie, il prend des cours d'aviation sur son temps libre avant de rejoindre l'United States Army Air Service engagée dans la Première Guerre mondiale. Il abat plusieurs avions allemands en combat en vol avant la fin de la guerre. En décembre 1918, alors que la guerre est terminée et qu'il vient de recevoir la date de son retour aux États-Unis, il fait un dernier vol sur un avion venant d'être réparé mais s'écrase aux alentours de Toul en France et décède des suites de l'accident. Il est par la suite honoré par différents temples de la renommée ; il est ainsi l'unique sportif à faire partie à la fois du temple de la renommée du hockey et du temple de la renommée du football universitaire américain. Depuis le début des années 1980, le meilleur joueur de hockey sur glace du championnat universitaire reçoit le trophée Hobey-Baker. (fr)
