- The geologic history of Vermont begins more than 450 million years ago during the Cambrian and Devonian periods. Human history of Native American settlement can be divided into the hunter-gatherer Archaic Period, from c. 7000–1000 BC, and the sedentary Woodland Period, from c. 1000 BC to AD 1600. Vermont was admitted to the United States as the fourteenth state in 1791 after a brief period of sovereignty following the American Revolutionary War. Vermont experienced rising abolitionist sentiment and subsequently fought on the Union side of the American Civil War. (en)
- L'Histoire du Vermont est différente de celle des premiers États ayant formé les États-Unis à l'issue de la guerre d'indépendance des États-Unis. Son territoire, proche géographiquement du Canada, alors anglais, était l'objet de disputes entre les colonies anglaises de la côte. Le contrôle de Fort Ticonderoga, point de portage important stratégique sur les routes commerciales entre le bassin de l'Hudson, contrôlé par les Britanniques, et le bassin du Saint-Laurent, contrôlé par les Français. Surnommé « la clef du continent », a permis au Vermont de négocier avec les Anglais pendant, la guerre d'indépendance des États-Unis, ce qui explique qu'il ne soit devenu qu'en 1791, le 14e État de l'Union, le premier à s'ajouter aux treize fondateurs.
