Hamilton Palace was a country house in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The former seat of the Dukes of Hamilton, it dated from the 14th century and was subsequently much enlarged in the 17th and 19th centuries. Widely acknowledged as having been one of the grandest houses in the British Isles, the palace was situated at the centre of the extensive Low Parks (now Strathclyde Country Park), with the Great Avenue, a north–south tree-lined avenue over three miles (five kilometres) in length, as its axis. Hier bildete der Palast das Zentrum einer weitreichenden Gartenanlage, deren Prunkstück eine sich über fünf Kilometer erstreckende Allee war. Hamilton Palace war die größte nicht-königliche Residenz in Großbritannien, möglicherweise auch in Europa. 1695 erbaut, begann der Boden zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts durch Bergbauarbeiten abzusacken, woraufhin die Familie gezwungen war nach zu ziehen, ihren nahegelegenen Jagdsitz. Das Schloss wurde 1921 abgerissen. 1946 zog die Familie Douglas-Hamilton in das neu erworbene Lennoxlove House östlich von Edinburgh und verkaufte Dungavel House an das National Coal Board, welches es an die Regierung weiterverkaufte, die es seither als Gefängnis nutzt. Ein Großteil der Einrichtung des abgerissenen Palastes und die bedeutende Kunstsammlung wurden nach Lennoxlove transferiert, wo sie in den Sommermonaten zu besichtigen sind. Man använde då de ursprungliga ritningarna. Slutligen blev det en enorm byggnad, en av de största i Skottland. Paradvåningen kom med tiden att innehålla en värdefull konstsamling med verk av Tizian, Anthonis van Dyck och många andra. Men till slut blev det ohållbart att bo i ett så stort hus och efter att ha varit uthyrt åt brittiska staten under första världskriget som sjukhus revs hela det enorma huset 1921. Den officiella förklaringen var att hela huset höll på att sjunka (till följd av familjens egna kolgruvor, som delvis löpte in under grunden).
