- The Congress of the People (COPE) is a South African political party formed in 2008 by former members of the African National Congress (ANC). The party was founded by former ANC members Mosiuoa Lekota, Mbhazima Shilowa and Mluleki George to contest the 2009 general election. The party was announced following a national convention held in Sandton on 1 November 2008, and was founded at a congress held in Bloemfontein on 16 December 2008. The name echoes the 1955 Congress of the People at which the Freedom Charter was adopted by the ANC and other parties, a name strongly contested by the ANC in a legal move dismissed by the Pretoria High Court. In the 2009 general election, the party received 1,311,027 votes and a 7.42% share of the vote. Following the 2009 elections, COPE experienced a leadership dispute between factions supporting Mosiuoa Lekota and others supporting Mbhazima Shilowa, that led to a 2013 court battle, and continued into 2014. After the 2014 election, COPE was left with only three seats in the National Assembly, down from 30 seats in 2009. Despite its reduced stature, the party has joined with the much larger Democratic Alliance (DA) and several other smaller parties to co-govern Nelson Mandela Bay, Johannesburg and Tshwane after the 2016 municipal elections. El partido fue anunciado después de una convención nacional celebrada en Sandton el 1 de noviembre de 2008, y se fundó en un congreso celebrado en Bloemfontein el 16 de diciembre de 2008. Su nombre hace eco del Congreso del Pueblo de 1955, mencionado en la Carta de la Libertad adoptada por el ANC. Por tal motivo, el nombre fue disputado legalmente por el partido oficialista, con el Tribunal Superior de Pretoria fallando a favor de COPE. En las elecciones generales de Sudáfrica de 2009 y habiéndose fundado tan solo medio año atrás, COPE logró posicionarse como tercera fuerza nacional con casi un millón y medio de votos (7.42%) y 30 de los 400 escaños de la Asamblea Nacional. Al hacerlo contribuyó a privar al ANC de su mayoría absoluta de dos tercios, y arrebató el tercer puesto al Partido de la Libertad Inkatha (IFP), que quedó en cuarto lugar. Dado que Alianza Democrática (DA), principal partido de la oposición, no presentó una candidatura presidencial en el Parlamento, COPE si lo hizo, con como candidato, desafiando por segunda vez al candidato oficialista, en este caso Jacob Zuma. Sin embargo, muy poco tiempo después de las elecciones, en el partido estalló una disputa de liderazgo entre las distintas facciones que apoyaban a Mosiuoa Lekota y otros apoyando a , lo que llevó a una batalla judicial que duraría hasta la victoria de Lekota en 2014. Sin embargo, las disputas repercutieron en la popularidad del partido, perdiendo la mitad de su electorado en las elecciones municipales de 2011. Desde ese año hasta 2014, la mitad de los diputados de COPE o bien retornaron al ANC o bien se unieron a DA u a otros partidos. Finalmente, en las elecciones generales de 2014, el partido obtuvo solo 3 escaños y un 0.67% del voto popular, ubicándose en octavo lugar y perdiendo prácticamente toda su relevancia política. En 2016, junto a otros partidos, COPE se unió a Alianza Democrática para formar gobiernos de coalición en las elecciones municipales de ese año, particularmente Nelson Mandela Bay, Johannesburgo, y Tshwane. - Congress of the People (Cope) is een Zuid-Afrikaanse politieke partij. Het was van 2009 tot 2014 na het Afrikaans Nationaal Congres en de Democratische Alliantie de grootste partij van Zuid-Afrika, maar is in de verkiezingen van 7 mei 2014 gedecimeerd en op de achtste plaats beland. De gematigd linkse partij is opgericht door voormalige leden van het ANC na een onderlinge strijd tussen de aanhangers van Thabo Mbeki en Jacob Zuma. Nadat Zuma in 2007 tot president van het ANC werd gekozen splitsten pro-Mbeki dissidenten van het ANC zich af en werd de COPE opgericht. De naam is ontleend aan een in 1955 in Bloemfontein gehouden congres waar het werd aangenomen door het ANC en andere partijen. Dit vrijheidsmanifest was nadat in 1994 het ANC aan het bewind kwam een belangrijke grondslag voor de huidige grondwet. Cope stelt zich de bescherming van die grondwet tot doel. (nl)
