The Château de Brest (Breton: Kastell Brest) is a castle in Brest, Finistère, France. The oldest monument in the town, it is located at the mouth of the river Penfeld at the heart of the roadstead of Brest, one of the largest roadsteads in the world. From the Roman castellum to Vauban's citadel, the site has over 1700 years of history, holding right up to the present day its original role as a military fortress and a strategic location of the highest importance. It is thus the oldest castle in the world still in use, and was classified as a monument historique on 21 March 1923.

Son architecture est donc complexe et faite de multiples rajouts. Quelques éléments des murailles romaines sont toujours visibles. Les tours Paradis conservent leur aspect médiéval avec toitures en poivrière et mâchicoulis. Dans son état actuel, le château reste avant tout caractéristique d'une architecture bastionnée, développée pour répondre à l'emploi de l'artillerie. Le contrôle de la région passant par sa possession, il suscite la convoitise du duc de Bretagne Jean Ier qui l'achète au vicomte de Léon en 1235. Au cours de la guerre de Cent Ans, il devient un enjeu pour les belligérants. Livré aux Anglais par Jean de Montfort, le château est assiégé à plusieurs reprises, avant d'être racheté par le duc Jean IV en 1397. Occupé successivement par les Bretons, les Anglais et les Français, il est l'objet d'importants travaux pour lui garder son caractère de forteresse quasi imprenable. Les ducs Jean V, puis François II en 1464 le dotent d'une puissante artillerie et font construire la porte d'entrée flanquée de deux grosses tours, d'un pont-levis et d'une herse pour en défendre l'entrée. L'édification des autres tours s’achève au début du XVIe siècle et Vauban met la dernière touche aux fortifications en 1689. En juin 1940, l'armée allemande s'y installe. Après la guerre, une nouvelle préfecture maritime est édifiée dans la cour, en lieu et place des casernes détruites par les bombardements. Il accueille, depuis 1958, un musée de la Marine. (fr)
