- Buddhism is the most widely practiced religion in Bhutan. Vajrayana Buddhism is the state religion of Bhutan, and Buddhists comprise 84.3% and Hinduism 11.3% of its population. Although the Buddhism practiced in Bhutan originated in Tibetan Buddhism, it differs significantly in its rituals, liturgy, and monastic organization. The state religion has long been supported financially by the government through annual subsidies to Buddhist monasteries, shrines, monks, and nuns. In the modern era, support of the state religion during the reign of Jigme Dorji Wangchuck includes the manufacture of 10,000 gilded bronze images of the Buddha, publication of elegant calligraphic editions of the 108-volume Kangyur (Collection of the Words of the Buddha) and the 225-volume Tengyur (Collection of Commentaries), and the construction of numerous chorten (stupas) throughout the country. Guaranteed representation in the National Assembly and the Royal Advisory Council, Buddhists constitute the majority of society and are assured an influential voice in public policy. (en)

Seppur il Buddhismo praticato in Bhutan ha origine diretta dal Buddhismo Tibetano, finisce col differenziarsi in modo significativo per rituali, liturgia e organizzazione monastica.In quanto religione di Stato il buddhismo è stato lungamente sostenuto finanziariamente dal governo attraverso annuali sovvenzioni sia ai santuari specifici che ai monasteri buddhisti in generale, oltre ai vari gruppi di monaci e monache. In epoca contemporanea, il sostegno alla religione durante il lungo regno di Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (dal 1952 al 1972) ha incluso anche la costruzione di migliaia di immagini in bronzo dorato del Buddha, pubblicate poi in eleganti edizioni calligrafiche dei 108 volumi del Kangyur (il canone del buddhismo tibetano) o "Raccolta delle parole del Buddha" e dei 225 volumi del Tengyur o "Raccolta dei commenti agl'insegnmenti"; oltre alla costruzione di numerosi chörten in tutto il paese.Avendo una rappresentanza garantita sia nell'assemblea nazionale che nel consiglio reale consultivo e costituendo la stragrande maggioranza della società, i buddhisti sono una voce influente ed assicurata nella politica pubblica del regno.
