- Bernt Michael Holmboe (23 March 1795 – 28 March 1850) was a Norwegian mathematician. He was home-tutored from an early age, and was not enrolled in school until 1810. Following a short period at the Royal Frederick University, which included a stint as assistant to Christopher Hansteen, Holmboe was hired as a mathematics teacher at the Christiania Cathedral School in 1818, where he met the future renowned mathematician Niels Henrik Abel. Holmboe's lasting impact on mathematics worldwide has been said to be his tutoring of Abel, both in school and privately. The two became friends and remained so until Abel's early death. Holmboe moved to the Royal Frederick University in 1826, where he worked until his own death in 1850. Holmboe's significant impact on mathematics in the fledgling Norway was his textbook in two volumes for secondary schools. It was widely used, but faced competition from Christopher Hansteen's alternative offering, sparking what may have been Norway's first debate about school textbooks. (en)

Il passe une courte période de sa vie à l'université du roi Frédéric (aujourd'hui l'université d'Oslo), où il est pendant un temps l'assistant de Christopher Hansteen. Holmboe est ensuite embauché comme professeur de mathématiques à l'école cathédrale de Christiania en 1818, où il rencontre le mathématicien désormais célèbre Niels Henrik Abel. Holmboe ontving vanaf jonge leeftijd thuisonderwijs en werd pas in 1810 op de kathedraalschool van Christiana (het latere Oslo) ingeschreven. Na een korte studieperiode aan de Koninklijk Frederik Universiteit, waar hij als studentassistent enige tijd voor Christopher Hansteen werkte, volgde in 1818 Holmboe's aanstelling tot aan de kathedraalschool van Christiana. Hier kreeg hij de later wereldberoemd geworden wiskundige Niels Henrik Abel als leerling in zijn klas. Holmboes blijvende invloed op de wiskunde is zijn voorbeeldige begeleiding van Abel, zowel op school als privé. De twee werden vrienden en dit bleef zo tot de vroege dood van Abel in 1829. Holmboe werd in 1826 tot docent aan de Koninklijke Frederik Universiteit benoemd. Hier zou hij tot zijn dood in 1850 blijven werken. In 1844 werd hij verkozen tot lid van de Koninklijke Zweedse Academie van Wetenschappen. Holmboe’s belangrijkste invloed op de wiskunde in het prille Noorwegen was zijn tweedelige leerboek wiskunde voor middelbare scholen.
