V knize Hobit se účastní výpravy svého příbuzného Thorina Pavézy, která má za cíl zabití draka Šmaka a obnovení Království pod Horou. Bojoval v bitvě pěti armád a stal se velice dobrým přítelem hobita Bilba Pytlíka. V roce 2989 odvádí z Ereboru výpravu trpaslíků do zpustlé Morie. Jeho družina však selže a Balin je roku 2994 skřety zabit. V knize Společenstvo prstenu objeví společenstvo jeho náhrobek. (cs)
- Balin is a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium. A Dwarf, he is an important supporting character in The Hobbit, and is mentioned in The Fellowship of the Ring. As the Fellowship travel through the underground realm of Moria, they find Balin's tomb and the Dwarves' book of records, which tells how Balin founded a colony there, becoming Lord of Moria, and that the colony was overrun by orcs. Balin featured in the 1977 Rankin/Bass animated film of The Hobbit; in Peter Jackson's 2012–2014 live-action film series, where he is portrayed by Ken Stott as reluctant to search for lost gold and sympathetic to Bilbo; and in the 2003 video game adaptation where he is voiced by Victor Raider-Wexler. - Balin is een personage uit het boek De Hobbit van Tolkien. Balin was een dwerg en werd geboren in 2763 in het Koninkrijk onder de berg Erebor. In 2770 werden alle inwoners van Erebor door de draak Smaug verdreven. In 2790 volgde Balin Koning Thrain II in de bloedige oorlog tussen de dwergen en de Orks, waarna hij zich voor enige tijd in een dwergenkolonie in de Blauwe Bergen vestigde. In 2841 probeerde hij samen met Thrain II terug te keren naar Erebor maar dat resulteerde slechts in de dood van Thrain, waarna hij weer terugkeerde naar de Blauwe Bergen. Een eeuw later voegde hij zich bij het gezelschap van Thorin Eikenschild en hun succesvolle queeste van Erebor, waar Smaug werd gedood en het Koninkrijk onder de Berg werd hersteld. In 2989 verliet Balin Erebor om een poging te doen het dwergenkoninkrijk van Moria te herstellen. Vijf jaar vocht hij daar tegen Orks en de Balrog. Aanvankelijk met succes, maar uiteindelijk werd hij samen met al zijn volgelingen gedood. (nl)
