- Anthology Film Archives ist ein von Filmemachern und -sammlern gegründetes unabhängiges Museum zu Bewahrung, Ausstellung und Studium der Filmkunst. Sein Sitz ist in New York City. Ihren Ursprung hat die bis heute einzigartige Institution in den frühen 1960er Jahren, als Jonas Mekas, der in seiner Film-Makers’ Cinematheque aktuelle Experimentalfilme zeigte, den Plan zu einer dauerhaften Einrichtung für regelmäßige Vorführungen und zu einer Anlaufstelle für Filmemacher entwickelte. 1969 nahmen die Pläne konkrete Form an, als Mekas zusammen mit Jerome Hill, , Peter Kubelka und Stan Brakhage ein Museum für Filmkunst konzipierte, das sich ausschließlich auf das Avantgarde-Kino konzentrieren sollte. Ein Organisationskomitee, bestehend aus Mekas, Kubelka, Adams Sitney, und trat zusammen, um eine repräsentative Auswahl von Filmkunstwerken (The Essential Cinema Repertory) zu treffen. Das Museum bot auch deutschen Filmemachern wie Rosa von Praunheim eine Plattform, ihre Filme in der Weltmetropole New York zu präsentieren. Am 30. November 1970 eröffnete Anthology Film Archives die Pforten in Joseph Papps Public Theater, 1974 zog man in die Wooster Street um, und schließlich fand man den endgültigen Standort 1979 in der Second Avenue von Manhattan, wo man ein ehemaliges Gerichtsgebäude erwarb. Das Haus verfügt heute über zwei Vorführsäle, eine Fachbibliothek und eine Restaurierungswerkstatt. La sala cinematografica e l'archivio sono dislocati al 32 Second Avenue all'angolo di East Second Street nell'East Village di Manhattan a New York. L'archivio è uno dei più vasti al mondo per quel che riguarda il cinema d'avanguardia e sperimentale ed è l'unica organizzazione non a scopo di lucro newyorkese di questo genere che riesce a mantenersi indipendente tramite l'autosufficienza finanziaria, con circa 1000 proiezioni pubbliche programmate ogni anno, incontri settimanali con gli artisti ed il loro lavoro, e con pubblicazioni storiche e scolastiche di libri e cataloghi. L'Anthology Film Archives conserva poi circa 20.000 film e 5.000 videocassette. Conserva poi una vasta collezione di libri e materiale cartaceo e documentando così la storia del film e del video come arte, sia Americana che internazionale, consentendone l'accesso a studenti, ricercatori, scrittori, artisti e curatori. - Anthology Film Archives är ett internationellt center i New York för arkivering, restaurering, studier och visning av film och video med tyngdpunkten på alternativa, avantgarde och oberoende filmproduktioner och klassiker. Idag har Anthology Film Archives över 120 000 filmtitlar i sitt arkiv. Anthology Film Archives öppnade den 30 november 1970 och grundarna var Jonas Mekas, Stan Brakhage, och . Först låg den i Josepph Papp's public Theater men flyttade 1974 till 80 Wooster Street. Från och med 12 oktober 1988 ligger Anthology Film Archives i East Village i Manhattan's Second Avenue Courthouse building där det finns två biografer, ett referensbibliotek, en avdelning för restaurering av film, administrativa kontor och ett konstgalleri. Dagligen visas nya och klassiska filmer och deras referensbibliotek innehåller den största samlingen material som dokumenterar historien om avantgarde- och independetfilm och video. Samlingen innehåller böcker, tidningar, fotografier, affischer, ljudinspelningar av föreläsningar och intervjuer, kataloger tillsammans med arkiv från filmskapare och organisationer som i sin tur bland annat innehåller manuskript, brev, anteckningsböcker och tidningsklipp. Anthology Film Archives har ansvarat för arkiveringen och restaureringen av filmskapare som Stan Brakhage, Joseph Cornell, Maya Deren, , , Jonas Mekas, och etcetera.
