V dolu nedaleko obce byly ke konci 2. světové války ukryty umělecké sbírky uloupené nacisty v okupované Evropě. Našlo se zde skoro 7000 děl. Byly mezi nimi například slavný Gentský oltář bratří Eycků nebo Michelangelova Madona z Brugg, ale též náš cyklus Mistra vyšebrodského oltáře. (cs)

Die Gemeinde liegt im Bezirk Liezen (Gerichtsbezirk Liezen) und umfasst mit 92,57 km² große Teile des Ausseerlandes und des Toten Gebirges. Der Ort am Fuße des Losers ist besonders als Kurort bekannt und liegt direkt am Altausseer See. Die Besiedelungsgeschichte Altaussees geht auf die Zeit um 200 bis 400 nach Christus zurück, wobei der Salzbergbau eine tragende Rolle bei der Entstehung des Ortes spielte. Nach dem Ende der Römerzeit siedelten sich Slawen im Ausseerland an, die ab dem 8. Jahrhundert nach und nach von bairischen Siedlern assimiliert wurden. Im Mittelalter war das Gemeindegebiet zunächst Teil der landesfürstlichen Herrschaft Grauscharn-Pürgg, dann der Herrschaft Pflindsberg. Im Lauf des 19. Jahrhunderts trat der Tourismus in Form der Sommerfrische in Erscheinung und löste in der Folge den Bergbau als wichtigsten Wirtschaftsfaktor ab. Während der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus wurde der Ort in die Verwaltungseinheit Oberdonau (Oberösterreich) eingegliedert, 1948 kam er wieder zurück zur Steiermark. Von 1943 bis 1945 bestand im Salzbergwerk Altaussee ein Kunstdepot für österreichische und deutsche Kunstgüter und NS-Raubkunst aus ganz Europa. Altaussee gehört heute zu den Gemeinden mit der höchsten Anzahl an Übernachtungen im Bezirk Liezen. Das Salzbergwerk Altaussee ist die größte Salzabbaustätte Österreichs. (de)
