Nachází se v mexickém státě Guanajuato zhruba 11 km severně od města San Miguel de Allende, jehož historické jádro je pod společným zápisem s touto stavbou taktéž kulturním dědictvím UNESCO. Vznikl v 18. století. Jeho architektura unikátním způsobem spojuje tehdejší evropskou (španělskou), kreolskou a původní mezoamerickou kulturu a umění v Novém Španělsku. Juli 1748 von Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro gestifteter Sakralbau im Municipio San Miguel de Allende des mexikanischen Bundesstaates Guanajuato. 2008 wurde die Stadt San Miguel de Allende zusammen mit der jesuitischen Wallfahrtskirche in Atotonilco von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt. Gewürdigt wurde dabei, dass beide ein herausragendes Beispiel des mexikanischen Barock und für den Austausch zwischen spanischer und lateinamerikanischer Kultur sind.

- El Santuario de Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco es un templo barroco del siglo XVIII situado a 14 kilómetros de San Miguel en el estado mexicano de Guanajuato. Fundado por el padre Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro en el año de 1740 quien se inspiró para su edificación en el Santo Sepulcro ubicado en Jerusalén. Este Santuario dedicado a Jesús Nazareno, fungió como casa de Ejercicios Espirituales de San Ignacio de Loyola. El Santuario de Atotonilco es mundialmente conocido por haber sido partícipe en la historia de la Independencia de México, cuando el Cura Miguel Hidalgo, tomó un estandarte con la imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe como bandera del ejército insurgente. La importancia del Santuario quedó plasmada el 8 de julio de 2008 cuando fue declarado Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO junto a la ciudad de San Miguel de Allende. La construcción recibe cada semana a más de 5,000 personas de diversas partes del mundo, atraídas por sus increíble arquitectura y sus hermosos murales. El santuario de Jesús Nazareno fue además uno de los más de 60 sitios individuales inscritos en 2010 como Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, parte del Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (n.º ref. 1351-015). - The Sanctuary of Atotonilco (Spanish: Santuario de Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco [atotoˈnilko]) is a church complex and part of a World Heritage Site, designated along with nearby San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. The complex was built in the 18th century by Father Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro, who, according to tradition, was called upon by a vision of Jesus with a crown of thorns on his head with blood on his face and carrying a cross. The main feature of the complex is the rich Mexican Baroque mural work that adorns the main nave and chapels. This was chiefly the work of Antonio Martínez de Pocasangre over a period of thirty years. The mural work has led the complex to be dubbed the "Sistine Chapel of Mexico." The complex remains a place of worship and penance to this day, attracting as many as 5,000 visitors every week. (en)
