Am 6. März 1939 wurde das Allgemeine Umschriftsystem – neben einem zweiten Genauen Umschriftsystem, das aber viele diakritische Zeichen verwendete und deshalb nicht sehr beliebt wurde (in diesem ISO 11940 System als Zeichenfolge Kār t̄hxd xạks̄ʹr thịy pĕn xạks̄ʹr romạn bæb t̄h̀āy s̄eīyng k̄hxng rāchbạṇṯhitys̄t̄hān) – durch das Königliche Institut Thailands eingeführt und seit dem von diesem zweimal revidiert. Die letzte Revision des Jahres 1999 wurde am 14. September 2000 von der thailändischen Regierung als nationales Standardsystem der Romanisierung offiziell bestätigt. Das Thailändische Umschriftsystem wird zum Beispiel für Straßenschilder oder Veröffentlichungen der thailändischen Regierung benutzt, aber auch die UN und die BGN/PCGN haben es für geografische Namen übernommen. Da dieses Umschriftsystem jedoch erhebliche Nachteile aufweist (siehe unten), halten sich selbst Regierungsstellen nicht immer daran und es existieren daneben noch weitere Romanisierungssysteme. So haben viele Sprachlehrbücher, Wörterbücher sowie Reiseführer ein eigenes System der Romanisierung. Zudem basieren solche Systeme oft vollständig auf dem Englischen, sodass dann vor allem die Umschrift der Vokale besonders unregelmäßig ist. (de)

È un sistema che rende un'idea approssimativa della reale pronuncia thai, dato che in tale lingua esistono lettere e suoni non presenti in quella latina. Oltre al sistema RTGS vengono usati altri sistemi di trascrizione delle parole thailandesi con lettere latine, e sono generalmente basati sul modo in cui queste ultime sono usate nella lingua inglese: ad esempio il verbo avere, che si scrive มี, in RTGS viene trascritto mi, ma usando un altro sistema si trova trascritto con il più foneticamente fedele mee in cui il digramma ee viene pronunciato con una i lunga, come in Bruce Lee e come nella voce del verbo essere sii.
