- The name death's-head hawkmoth refers to any of three moth species of the genus Acherontia (Acherontia atropos, Acherontia styx and Acherontia lachesis). The former species is found in Europe and throughout Africa, the latter two are Asian; most uses of the common name refer to the European species. These moths are easily distinguishable by the vaguely human skull-shaped pattern of markings on the thorax. They are large nocturnal moths with brown and yellow or orange coloring, and all three species are fairly similar in size, coloration and life cycle. (en)

Spesies Acherontia atropos kebanyakan dapat dijumpai di Eropa, sementara dua spesies lainnya banyak ditemukan di Asia dan hampir sebagian besar menggunakan nama umum yang merujuk pada spesies Eropa. Ngengat ini mudah dibedakan dengan tanda pola berbentuk tengkorak manusia di bagian toraks. Ketiga spesies tersebut cukup mirip dalam hal ukuran, warna dan siklus hidup. Semua tiga spesies ngengat memiliki kemampuan untuk mengeluarkan suara mengerik yang keras bila merasa terancam. Ketiga spesies umumnya menyerang sarang lebah dari jenis lebah madu untuk memakan madu yang tersimpan di dalamnya; A. atropos hanya menyerang koloni seperti Apis mellifera. Mereka dapat bergerak di sarang tanpa merasa terganggu karena mereka dapat meniru aroma lebah sehingga lebah di sarang tidak merasa ada ancaman. (in)
