- Tamburlaine the Great ist ein Theaterstück in zwei Teilen des englischen Dramatikers Christopher Marlowe. Es basiert lose auf dem Leben des zentralasiatischen Militärführers Timur (Temür ibn Taraghai Barlas, 1336–1405). Als das Drama 1587 oder 1588 niedergeschrieben wurde, galt es als Meilenstein der englischen Literatur des Elisabethanischen Zeitalters; es markiert eine Abkehr von der plumpen Sprache und den simplen Handlungen in den Stücken früherer Dramatiker hin zu einem neuen Interesse an frischer und lebendiger Sprache, herausragendem Handlungsgeschehen und intellektueller Komplexität. Zusammen mit der Spanischen Tragödie von Thomas Kyd könnte es als erster öffentlicher Erfolg des Elisabethanischen Theaters angesehen werden. Marlowe, als der Herausragendste einer Gruppe von Dramatikern, die später unter dem Namen University Wits zusammengefasst wurden, beeinflusste die Autoren in der Regierungszeit Jakob I. und der Widerhall des Bombasts und der sprachlichen Ambition, wie sie in Tamburlaine zu hören ist, kann man in allen Stücken jener Zeit bis hin zur Schließung der Londoner Theater (1642) bemerken. Certains commentateurs y voient une manifestation d'athéisme et une critique du christianisme alors que d'autres insistent sur la veine anti-musulmane du texte, illustrée par exemple par une scène où l'on brûle le Coran. Fin 2005, cette même scène a été à l'origine d'une polémique autour de la mise en scène de David Farr, pour laquelle le texte était légèrement altéré pour « adoucir » l'aspect spécifiquement anti-Islam et en faire une critique « plus puissante » de l'ensemble des religions. Written in 1587 or 1588, the play is a milestone in Elizabethan public drama; it marks a turning away from the clumsy language and loose plotting of the earlier Tudor dramatists, and a new interest in fresh and vivid language, memorable action, and intellectual complexity. Along with Thomas Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy, it may be considered the first popular success of London's public stage. Marlowe, generally considered the best of that group of writers known as the University Wits, influenced playwrights well into the Jacobean period, and echoes of the bombast and ambition of Tamburlaine's language can be found in English plays all the way to the Puritan closing of the theatres in 1642. While Tamburlaine is considered inferior to the great tragedies of the late-Elizabethan and early-Jacobean period, its significance in creating a stock of themes and, especially, in demonstrating the potential of blank verse in drama, is still acknowledged. Whereas the real Timur was of Turkic-Mongolian ancestry and belonged to the nobility, for dramatic purposes Marlowe depicts him as a Scythian shepherd who rises to the rank of emperor. (en)
