- Les aeronaus poden tenir diferents maneres d'enlairament i aterratge. Els avions convencionals acceleren al llarg de la pista fins que es genera una sustentació suficient per a l'enlairament i reverteixen el procés d'aterratge. Alguns avions poden enlairar a baixa velocitat, sent un curt enlairament. Algunes aeronaus com ara els helicòpters i els poden enlairar i aterrar verticalment. Some airplanes can take off at low speed, this being a short takeoff. Some aircraft such as helicopters and Harrier jump jets can take off and land vertically. - Gemotoriseerde vliegtuigen kunnen bij het starten en landen gebruikmaken van een aantal verschillende methoden. maken gebruik van een startbaan om op te stijgen, daarvoor is -afhankelijk van het toestel- een korte of langere startbaan voor nodig. Een helikopter kan verticaal opstijgen. In gebieden waar veel objecten een normale start en landing hinderen kan het nodig zijn af te wijken van de standaard methode. Ook kan de infrastructuur een rol spelen. Vooral militaire toestellen moeten vaak opereren in een gebied waar geen goede infrastructuur aanwezig is waardoor het nodig is een vliegtuig te ontwerpen dat een verkorte start- en landingsbaan nodig heeft of zelfs helemaal geen.
